My but everyone looked like a consummate goof back then.
I remember having a few of those haircuts....we didn't know any better. So sad.

Re: The Monkees
My prior familiarity with The Monkees was limited to being vaguely aware that Mickey Dolenz jump-started the "Frodo Lives!" meme back in the '60s, but I've been listening to a fair bit of their music today since hearing the sad news about Davy Jones. They're pretty good; I'm reminded somewhat of The Animals, whom I'm more familiar with. The song "Words" that Orwell posted in this thread is probably my favorite I've heard so far.
Re: The Monkees
The best fake band ever. (with the possible exception of Spinal Tap)

Re: The Monkees
What I said they were the best!
Besides they were actors hired for a kids tv show to play the members of a supposedly world famous 'beatles like' band. And most of their hits were written for the show. Their success mimicked the shows plot- they were a pretend famous band with pretend hits who ended up a real famous band with real hits.

Re: The Monkees
Back-pedaller! They actually got to know the Beatles, and John loved their show. All four worked with individuals of the band at one time or another. They had a lot of great songs. They wrote some good songs themslves too. Pete's Song, Listen to the Band come to mind... "Head" was a great movie. (Not sure what it was about --- a 'head' I think? ) I went to see a double feature "Head" and the "Blues Brothers" which were 'cult' movies in the early days. Oh what a rich life I've lived... Peace, Man!

Re: The Monkees
I ain't dissing the monkees man! Just saying they were, at least not a band originally in the conventional way of the time, and some people (not me of course!) could lay the blame for the plague of bland industry created boy and girl bands that have haunted the charts ever since at their feet.
They were great- what the industry did with the idea not so great.

Re: The Monkees
Yep, the career of the Monkees was not unlike that of Miley Cyrus. (...should I start running now?)

Re: The Monkees
DEATH WARRANT ISSUED
Shirriff Mirabella Banks has issued the following proclamation.
"Ye Halfwit of Undercovers in the South Farthing is henceforth stripped of all respectability as ye has proclaimed seditious and ridiculous commentaries recently and hath gone beyond the pale, perfectly so, by harming some poor defenceless Primates! He must be arrested on sight, executed, and then given a fair trial to clear the fame of his memory."
Juding by the archaic legalism of the language, Mirabella means business. And her still in the middle of Bridal Shopping. And to think, I never thought of Halfwise as the Seditious type.

Oh Lordy, off I go to find a porch to hide under. Maybe if I get a Monkee hair cut and sunglasses I won't be recognized.

Hey mate, I must say I wouldn't mind being Halfwise right now. If you ask me the thought of that hotty Mirabella and handcuffs sounds like a sizzling combination, if you catch my drift, nudge nudge, wink wink.

Re: The Monkees
Davy was not my favorite Monkee, but he will be missed all the same. Mickey was my favorite. And it is amazing that the band, as PT, Orwell and Halfwise have all stated, started as a TV creation (like Josie And The Pussycats) but became legit and memorable. Amazing!
Re: The Monkees
I can't agree more. And, I must say, it's great to hear from you, Paul.

Re: The Monkees
The only one with any actual musical insight and ability in the Monkees was Peter Tork, he was actually a friend of Stephen Stills' who was apparently washing dishes at some place at the time of the auditions. Stephens Stills went to the auditions, in his own words to see if they wanted anyone to write songs, which they didn't,but who knows, and he suggested Peter Tork when they didn't go for Stills, although they obviously found him interesting enough to take his advice. Stills had a bad tooth and was loosing his hair in his early twnties, so perhaps npot a perfect fit. Anyway, Stills called Tork, and the rest is history.
Tork felt bad for years afterwards that while he had all the money the Mokees gave him. His friends actually went off and had proper highly respecyted careers in the music industry, while he was forever tied into a fad, a joke in music circles.
