So what's been happenin'
Sorry I haven't been on in awhile, there got to be so few new posts that I checked the site less and less. Less and less eventually turned into not at all. So as the title of this thread says: what's been goin on?

Sticking with it through thick and thin Lorient! That's what goes on here in lean times.
When there's no news there can still be fun, games and creative stuff or just what is on your mind. But good to have you back about the place.
The trick is to keep things going around here- more people post stuff- easier that is to do.

Yes, Forumshire is a small village, so things can be slow at times. Actuallly, I know for a fact Petty is slow most of the time. But he is a solid, loyal chap, hard working in all things Forumshire-ish, as are the Bankses, and me, keeping Forumshire alive. And the rest of the long time Faithful pop in now and then, which keeps things ticking. And we have recently had Anne join recently, and the delightful Mrs Figg. We are few, but we battle on. Brave souls all.

Re: So what's been happenin'
It's great to see you again, Lorient! I'd been wondering what had happened to you. I'll admit to being one of the people who aren't as active since my real life is still a bit of a mess, but I've been making an effort to still check here regularly, even when I don't feel like saying something. You missed the very brief return of GB, which is a shame, because I am sure that you guys would have really hit it off in the Big Bad Serious Forum. Your respective political and cultural beliefs complement each other beautifully.
Seriously though, it's good to see you again, and I hope you'll stick around. I'm sure we can try to make a bit of noise for you.

Re: So what's been happenin'
It's been way too long since we had a proper, 20 page discussion about the films, the books, differences, what have you. Any topics anyone feel like reviving?

Re: So what's been happenin'
We could try to catalogue all the changes we know have/will be made to The Hobbit at this point and then argue over which ones are good and which ones aren't. But that might take more than 20 pages.

Stick around and hopefully he'll come back! I assume he's just having technical problems again.

I have no idea what you lot are on about, I am perfectly normal, in my perfectly normal barrel, drinking my buckie and trying to keep the wind and haggis out of my kilt (cheeky little buggers that they are, after nuts for winter )
Nothing out the ordinary there.

'Twas apparently a newsletter which brought GB back to us. I've received (seemingly automated) Forumshire newsletters in the past, but not for quite some time, so I don't know if it's the same as this new one.

Wow, this thread initiated I believe before I had rejoined the new forum. Funny that 2011 would have been a slow time, I don't remember the new forum being slow at all until the last few years.

We had a couple pronounced dips in activity in 2011. The first was in March and April, after the excitement of DPD and the initial frenzy of activity in building the New Forum had worn off. In a sense, that was simply a resumption of the dry spell we'd already been in during the first six weeks of the year. We started to shake off those blues in May and the detente with PT in June that brought over Elthir, Amarië, and Leelee helped even more. However, things were flagging again by the beginning of autumn and bottomed out in October.
On my end, that was the disaster semester where I was incredibly overworked as well as struggling with a bunch of other shit. I completely stopped posting for a bit after being in the hospital and Baingil also left the forum at that time. Just before the hospital I'd discovered the new community on Bree and posted links on each site. While our relationship with Bree was ultimately a tremendous boon to us, the initial flow of activity was primarily away from here to Bree. The tide began to shift in our favor by the end of the year, though, helped in part by the Bree login crisis (plus Petty's and Orwell's tireless ambassadorial efforts).
It feels rather quaint now to speak of any part of 2011 as being slow, given how things have gone the past few years, but that's how things have been trending for all extant Tolkien forums. Looking back over the activity records from the previous eight years can be a little depressing at times, but the drop-offs wouldn't be so pronounced if we hadn't had such a good run by the standards (for Tolkien forums) of our time, so I figure I just have to take the bad with the good.

We're just treading water until the Amazon series. Too bad we can't change our name to something less hobbit movie centric. in retrospect "concerning-hobbits.com" would have satisfied the original pull of the upcoming movie as well as leaving the wider Tolkien world open for discussion.
