Apparently he also had some choice comments about the Middle East, including stating that the Palestinian people are "committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel".

I wish I could say I was surprised by his comments, rather than just being surprised that he was dumb enough to say them openly in the age of information.

Poking around, I see that David Brooks, a fairly conservative columnist (despite writing for the New York Times) had a fairly harsh criticism of Romney in his column yesterday. I haven't tallied up the numbers or anything but it does seem as if Romney's own party is defending him less, first with the embassy comments and now with this leaked tape.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/18/opinion/brooks-thurston-howell-romney.html

This comment suggests a few things. First, it suggests that he really doesn’t know much about the country he inhabits. Who are these freeloaders? Is it the Iraq war veteran who goes to the V.A.? Is it the student getting a loan to go to college? Is it the retiree on Social Security or Medicare?

It suggests that Romney doesn’t know much about the culture of America. Yes, the entitlement state has expanded, but America remains one of the hardest-working nations on earth. Americans work longer hours than just about anyone else. Americans believe in work more than almost any other people. Ninety-two percent say that hard work is the key to success, according to a 2009 Pew Research Survey.

It says that Romney doesn’t know much about the political culture. Americans haven’t become childlike worshipers of big government. On the contrary, trust in government has declined. The number of people who think government spending promotes social mobility has fallen.

The people who receive the disproportionate share of government spending are not big-government lovers. They are Republicans. They are senior citizens. They are white men with high school degrees. As Bill Galston of the Brookings Institution has noted, the people who have benefited from the entitlements explosion are middle-class workers, more so than the dependent poor.

Romney’s comments also reveal that he has lost any sense of the social compact. In 1987, during Ronald Reagan’s second term, 62 percent of Republicans believed that the government has a responsibility to help those who can’t help themselves. Now, according to the Pew Research Center, only 40 percent of Republicans believe that.

He has more at the link. The BBC also has a round-up of other US pundit reactions here.

I've been rethinking my idea that Romney would be good for business simply because he'd make them feel more comfortable. he's been so off the wall recently that I can't see putting him in, even on a theory.

I'm not sure, but presidential forecasting polls go all over the place. All the major organizations have different values and they generally go back and forth cyclically. It's not until the week or so before the election that any poll has a reliable track record of accuracy.

Edit: For what it's worth though, the recent polls have not been kind to Romney on the Libya matter. TPM

Since this thread has been quiet for a while I thought I'd share this tidbit that was brought to my attention. Apparently there was a technical malfunction on Ann Romney's plane recently and it had to make an emergency landing. Fortunately everyone seems to be fine but the real gem here is in Romney's remarks afterwards.

LA Times

“When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous.

Laughing

I'm glad everyone who was on the plane is okay though. Smile

Did Romney really say that, Eldo? How can people vote for a guy that would open a window in a plane if he could?

Quite interesting statements from Ralph Nader about both Obama and Romney. Nader is probably best known for his role in the 2000 election but he's been a perennial candidate and one of the few widely-recognized forces on the left (the actual left) in America for several decades now.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/81649.html

There's great comments throughout the article so I can't really highlight much without highlighting everything. Nader offers his opinions on the disappointments with Obama's Presidency, how he measures up against Bush, the decline of the Republican Party, and the shortcomings of the two-party system. He gives some great zingers too. Very Happy

On Obama:

“I don’t know whether George W. Bush ever read the Constitution,” said Nader. “This man taught the Constitution, and this is what we got.”

On Romney:

"He’s not the old Romney, governor of Massachusetts. He’s had a character and personality makeover. He’s just bought into the extreme right wing of the Republican Party, represented by Paul Ryan, and I don’t think he’s going to be able to shake that. He’s basically a corporation running for president masquerading as a human being.”

I just watched it again and this is probably one of Jon Stewart's best segments since he took on CNBC over the financial crisis. Behold -- the spectacle that is Bullshit Mountain!

Remember the "legitimate rape" guy? He's baaaaaaack.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: You voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Why do you think it is okay for a woman to be paid less for doing the same work as a man?

AKIN: Well, first of all, the premise of your question is that I’m making that particular distinction. I believe in free enterprise. I don’t think the government should be telling people what you pay and what you don’t pay. I think it’s about freedom. If someone what’s to hire somebody and they agree on a salary, that’s fine, however it wants to work. So, the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble.

"the government sticking its nose into all kinds of things has gotten us into huge trouble."

Is that the sort of trouble where greedy businesses are forced to treat women equally in their pay with men for doing the same job then?
Yes I can see how that could be classed as trouble from a Republican point of view- it takes away the right of private enterprise to treat women unfairly in the workplace. What an outrageous idea!

Makes even a quasi-Tory like me feel sick in the gut, GB. For some reason, it brings back memories of that girl in Afghanistan who got shot by those Taliban chaps after one of their own had sex with her. What happened to him? Nothing? Arseholes!

I went ahead and took out the pictures and videos since they're right there two posts up and quoting them is really long. -Eldo
