Richmond Football Club The Tigers

I thought, as no one in Forumshire has a Australian Football League (AFL) team* they follow, that I would suggest you all support the Richmond Tigers. (The "Tiges").

Why you should:

(1) Of all Aussie Rules teams, the Tiges break your heart most regularly, but in such a fashion you can't ever be really sure they will - or won't. Yes, most supporters know they'll get their hearts broken, but Tiges supporters are truly delusional (like all true Fantasy lovers) and believe sincerely we'll do well next game. Our childlike naievety is our outstanding characteristic.

(2) Black and yellow are my favorite colours. Day and Night. Sun and Dark. Symbolic, or what! Pain never sleeps - nor Hope!

(3) We have the best theme song, which no one can ever take away from us. Our theme song is always voted as the best theme song, even by most other supporters.

Now, I don't know where this Tigerland place is, but I'm sure it's where all broken dreams are mended.

As to "the tigers of old" apparently they were indeed strong and bold, possibly back in the sabretooth days - but hope burns eternal.

Admittedly, our song does not make much sense, though the poetry (for a sporting club song) is of an excellent level (I said from a 'sporting' club song perspective! Don't laugh! ). Indeed, if it made sense in every line, it would mar the poetry, I feel. ( Ozhobbiton Poetry Reader: Yep - thought so).

Actually, having typed it out, I find the words quite esoteric! And violent! And neither is there much to suggest it has anything to do with sport, or Real tigers neither! No wonder I love it so!

(*I don't include or mention Western Australian supporters, to save any Western Australians - possibly of Brittish descent - the embarrassment of admitting to anything... err... embarrasing --- Freo? West Coast? I mean to say! ).

I actually think its the best game in the world. I even gave up football (soccer ) to play the game.
Scored 6 goals in one game once, then sadly i dislocated my elbow ending my participation in the sport.
After recovering from that life threatening injury i took up mixed netball with my girlfriend (now wife) and
then snapped my achilles tendon laying me off work for 8 months.
That was 9yrs ago, and have never played any sport scince.
Only indoor sport. No wot i mean, nudge nudge wink wink.

I'm willing to make a temporary concession, Chris, and barrack for West Coast this week. Seeing who you're playing, we both know why I'm making this concession.

As to achilles snapping, I snapped mine coaching Grade 6 Netball - after never seriously injuring myself during my career playing Aussie Rules and Basketball. Teaches me for being old.

Glad to see you love Aussie Rules. Most sane sporting people do once they have proper experience of it (though that might be a conundrum -"sane sporting people" that is! )

I'm feeling all philosophical now: we have people here from SOOOOO many countries. Most usually join up and LOVE Aussie Rules. I think it is because Aussie Rules evolved out of football (soccer), basketball, rugby - both Union and the Rugby one - street fighting (without knives or cudgels), and wanting to touch your fellow man in as many ways as possible. Also, it's the Water down here... As you know, if you drink Aussie water you tend to become an Aussie (a bit like turning into a Werewolf really, only - usually - less hairy). Those who don't become Aussies (the ones immune to our water) never Grow at All - and certainly never appreciate a Truly Madly Ever Evolving Sport..

(Petty's home sport - Shinwhacking or whatever it's called - is a pale sport by comparison - as are all other sports - except Under-blanket Tiddly-winks, apparently. ).

Oh yes, West Coast sucks! But not as much as another team, who I won't dignify by naming...

Oh btw thanks to those West Coast supporters who bought Tiger Memberships when we took up Cuz. We LOVE Cuz, but are willing to share Memories of him with you guys, 'cause you did LOVE him first, and still do, I trust.

This has nothing to do with the Tigers, but is far too good a thing to be put on that sub-standard and shabby (but perfectly okay for foreigners) "Äll things Sporting" thread --- I mean it kindly ---

Anyhow, Pam Stosur beat some Americohobbit, Serena or Venus or Pluto Wiliams at the American Open. Now, tennis is not really a sport by Aussie standards, but because it's thought of as an International Sport, Aussie's feel honour bound to win it now and then. Now Pam might have been held in higher honour if she was part of the Aussie Netball, Basketball or Soccer (yes, SOCCER) team, but this tournament is apparently worth winning, and noteworthy to foreigners. So congrats, girl!

Btw Cadel Evans won some bicycle race recently.

Sad such talented sports people have to win such individualistic pastimes, but Aussies know they have to do it. Helps put all foreigners in their place.

I'm hoping with their enlarged celebrity status they can help promote Aussie Rules and find a few more supporters for my beloved Tigers.

Of course, I don't mention any of the above in an egotistical jingoistic patriotic way, because Aussies are far too superior for such self-adoration. I'm just reminding you all that Aussies, pound for pound, are the most successful humans on Earth, and perhaps you all might learn something from us, for your own good.

Foreign? Foreign! Not where we come from! I'll have you know, Petty, Aussie Rules (well, the Tiger-lead Aussie game) is the ONLY sport in Forumshire worthy of it's OWN thread! The FACTS are obvious. (The rest have to share, being Minor sports, and all... )

The beauty of the world is that no matter where you are from its always full of obviouslty ridiculous 'foreign' stuff that's nowhere near as good as stuff at home and therefore open to mockery.
