Re: Elves
I have never met a perky archivist Dave, and I have been in a lot of archives, they all smell of book mould and have worn down stumps of fingers where they have endlessly flicked through card indexes.

first thing I do with a new book is dive in nose first and have a good sniff, I love the smell of books, thats why I dislike Kindle, its just not sensual enough.

Re: Elves
By the way Petty, here's a little example of me turning the table on myself (from another forum) with respect to 'leaving out' as revision (and the custom of the Chosen-name)...
So same basic issue, but here is where the pesky details or subjective opinions come in, as in this case The Shibboleth of Feanor's note on naming is notably shorter than the essay on naming in Laws And Customs Among the Eldar, and I think it's not unreasonable that a specfically Noldorin custom might have dropped out in the later essay due to simple brevity. Then again maybe it did drop out because Tolkien abandoned it, as CJRT considers, since it could have been referred to briefly for example...
... but anyway I thought I might acknowledge me arguing with me. Sometimes it's fun to do
Elthir once thought it reasonable to utter: '... but in The Shibboleth of Feanor Christopher Tolkien notes that the concept of the Chosen-name might have been abandoned in any case, given that it seems absent from a later account on naming customs.'
'I would agree that it seems possible that the Chosen-name was abandoned, but I think it's also possible (and maybe Christopher Tolkien might agree too) that the later account is merely briefer and means to speak more to the Eldar as a whole, perhaps not delving into Noldorin-specific custom here.'

Good plan! Just be warned that grey snow-horses all have pointy ears!
[seriously though, your theory looks internally consistent and fairly persuasive. The only problem is that there isn't enough evidence to rule out several other good theories, which really isn't a problem for a loremaster since it provides job security. If the job was easy, anybody could do it! ]

Ah yes, good point! They look a bit like certain kinds of leaves too... Shirly the Elves would have noticed.
Although I imagined a snow-horse to be more shaggy coated. Are you sure this isn't a grey sand-horse? Well, I'll take your word for it, and Sharrasi is on vacation at the moment (lodging includes breakfast in a mahogany room with musty books).

Re: Elves
More shaggy? Were you thinking of one of these, perhaps? It gets away from the pointy ear problem.

Re: Elves
More like the latest photo I guess (but maybe shaggier)... and I will be caring for grey versions so I can find them more easily in the snow compared to white.

Re: Elves
The horse on the right is a grey. If I wanted to find one in the snow, I'd hunt for the bay on the left. The grey is better for finding in the dark. (A wise horseman has one of each to cover all occasions. )

Oh I know it is a grey, but it's not grey (or doesn't look grey enough to me [in this picture] to be 'Sharrasin grey' anyway).
But we've been through this elsewhere, if I recall correctly

There are 2 horses in that pic? I thought there was just one and a pile of snow.

Well the score in the trailer might give it an extra air of wonderfulness, or 'wunderbarness' for those who don't speak German... but it does look very nice, I must admit.
And the Ents here look better than Jackson's Ents in my opinion, given the assumed relative budgets anyway

Re: Elves
I have to add, now that I can see them better (thanks to Mrs Figg) that I do not, however, imagine Ent-noses as that which is left of a sawed off branch... although perhaps I am interpreting something wrongly with respect to one of the photos.
I do imagine Ents more like, but not exactly like, Ted Nasmith's version (at least one of his renditions if I recall correctly), although with more variety however (again than the image that comes to mind anyway).

looking at them closer though, I must say they look more like tree trolls or totem poles, they seem to have lots of faces, but maybe Ents are tree trolls?

Hmm... maybe it wasn't Nasmith afterall. I'm not finding the picture I remember (on the web anyway), although I am finding a number of Ent paintings by Nasmith.
Oh well.
