Earthquake!
We just had an earthquake on the east coast of the U.S., epicenter in Virginia, that is being estimated as between 5.8 and 6.0 All sorts of news sites are loading really slow for me from all the people trying to check them, so I'm relying on Facebook friends for news. USGS reports as well:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/37.39.-79.-77_eqs.php
I don't know if there's anyone else on this site in the effected area but apparently it was felt as far as away as Boston, about 500 miles from the epicenter. My house was shaking pretty hard and making a lot of noise but there's no apparent damage or even mess to clean up. I hope everyone else is okay too. On the lookout for aftershocks, now.

Re: Earthquake!
I get that ~5.9 really isn't a big earthquake, but we're not supposed to have them here! I've never actually felt an earthquake before so it was really weird. Once again, I hope no one has been hurt.
Re: Earthquake!
I hope everyone stays safe! And thank goodness you're a decent distance away from the epicenter.

Re: Earthquake!
Weird when that sort of stuff happens in a place you dont expect it. Only ver experienced on quake, about half yours, when I was a kid. You dont expect them in Scotland either so was really weird for me as a kid as the adults didnt know waht was happening anyway. Funny thing about it was the US Navy base thought the Russians were attacking and the whole place went onto lockdown with sirens blazing. I remeber thinking "well that's that then." (or as I was kid that was the sentiment I think the actual words were "Oh s**t we are all going to die!"

I know there was an unrelated earthquake in Colorado (there are, of course, different fault lines in Colorado and Virginia) but the USGS doesn't seem to be aware of any recent sizable earthquakes in Illinois. Apparently there has been a fair bit of property damage around the mid-Atlantic region, but I haven't heard of any injuries or deaths yet, thankfully.

Re: Earthquake!
Stupid post. I thought this was new, even after reading half a page I still didn't catch the dates.

Re: Earthquake!
Funnily enough, my dad was just talking about this earthquake at dinner tonight. I hadn't thought about it in some time. This is still my favorite East Coast earthquake meme:

Re: Earthquake!
I could never work out if I liked or disliked that new posts on old forum threads bump them to front page again here, it's amusing when some weird old topics get bumped again after several years, but slightly weird to come across old posts of mine from 3 or 4 years ago and realize I am still posting the same sort of nonsense that I used to...
Adds to the cosy forum vibe here though

It's like a big fun treasure hunt to try and find the most embarrassing old posts of someone and shove them back into the light of day.

Re: Earthquake!
Fortunately my most embarrassing forum posts are on other sites. Though there are certainly threads where I cringe at my posts on here too.
Re: Earthquake!
I'm pretty sure I invoked a statute of limitations against halfwise once by refusing to argue in defense of a statement I had made 2.5 years previously after a thread was bumped. Though that exchange is probably considerably more than 2.5 years old itself by this point.

Re: Earthquake!
I wonder if I can find my first post here?, I think I remember which thread it was on, I just turned up unannounced one day after Figgsy mentioned the name on the old 'Bree' forum.
