Re: Tolkien: The True Tragedy?
The older I get the more I find fault with LotR and his more serious works. The Hobbit loses nothing with time. It's a classic. I always preferred FotR to the Silmarillionish parts of LotR btw. The more serious (less imaginative) stuff is easily seen as fiction. I don't have that problem with The Hobbit as The Hobbit is a story, a fable - somehow beyond question. The more realistic you try to make your fable the less realistic it becomes. People might even start calling you a racist and a sexist - which, of course, was never true, yet Tolkien did take the risk by attempting to realitize his fable in LotR. The Hobbit is out of time and all historical context, but is yet full of truth - for untrammellled truth is always found in all proper fables. You don't debate them unless you're a member of homo boobiensis. In a fable you just accept everything (if it's a well constructed fable). They are beyond question.
