that Whole sequence is great. I dont have one bad thing to say about it. I think its superb. The colours and textures are like a peraphaelite painting, I love the tension and the pathos of Boromirs Death. it was one of the best bits in the Whole LOTR. Aragorns costume is brilliant, the acting spot on. I LOVE IT.  I love you

PJ didnt shoot Boromir's death scene, if memory serves it was the second unit and Pj was off filming Legolas' shield surfing or something at the time.

I recall hearing in the documentaries that Boromir's death scene was edited by someone else, because PJ was too busy with other stuff during post-production, but I don't recall anything about PJ not filming it.  I would think that the death scene for a main character would be filmed by the first unit.

Barry Osborne shot the fight between Aragorn and Lurtz. That might be what everyone is thinking of.

During that amazing tracking shot when you see the orcs trying to run down the stairs in full mufti, fake feet and sandals, you can see them just flapping and shuffling down the stairs trying desperately not to fall over. That bit ain't intimidating at ALL.  Razz

Yeah, the way the orcs run is almost comical. But the way they fight is downright hilarious.

Yeah, they're real actors, I'll give them that. And I don't have many complaints about the design. It's a shame that their abilities didn't match their look, except for Lurtz and that other guy who nearly throttles Aragorn to death.

In general I really liked the designs of the orcs in LOTR, the Moria spidery ones with big eyes were great. I find it Amazing the contrast in quality from only 10 years ago, and its got WORSE????? men in costume is infinitely more convincing because subconsciously you know its real a real living creature, the eyes are real, whereas the dead eyes of cgi dont fool me.

I wonder if it's cheaper to use CGI than real actors. Otherwise, I don't know why you'd use CGI in shots where they're not needed.

good question, but I think cgi is probably more expensive and labour intensive than Trevor from down the pub with makeup on. could be wrong though.

It would makes sense if it was, because PJ had a huge budget for these films. I'm assuming that's why.

Economic reasons have certainly not been Jacksons claimed reason for all the CGI use.

Hasn't he been out in the media countless times heralding this as a project as a vehicle for him to use all the latest technology?

It certainly strange, in that context, that so much of it seems so last minute and looks so unimpressive.

ironic  Nod  that he spent more time and thought into all the padding and superflous cgi characters and they turn out less convincing than 10 years ago.

Very good point Figg. I agree. The Uruks looked real and the Azog gang just look like cartoons. Hard to fear a cartoon for me anyway. It only goes to show you MORE IS LESS.

One looks scarier than the other, but they're both about equally threatening.
