Re: Tolkien in Oxford
Thanyou for that Chris. Highly enjoyable watch. Shame they only thought to get the ideas of those at Oxford (that lot are running this country now!!) and one angry working class guy. And Tolkien himself comes across as a rather loveable old eccentirc don, funny how some people seem suited to their role in life.
And nice to see even Tolkien can make mistakes trying to write in elvish.

Re: Tolkien in Oxford
That was really wild Thanks for posting it, chris!
What made you think he was working class? I assumed they included him to show the intellectual anti-escapism response to Tolkien that cropped up at Oxford and elsewhere when the books became popular (and that is still carried on today by people who think art or entertainment should serve some greater "purpose").

Re: Tolkien in Oxford
Time period mainly. His manner of speaking, his stance on Tolkien's work are all very common of a working class leftwing intillectual type that was prolific during the 60' and especially the 70's in the UK (asuming we are talking about the same guy, with the moustache -if that narrows it down much). If he wasn't of that class himself then he was using their language.

Re: Tolkien in Oxford
I think we're talking about the same guy, and you would certainly no more about that than me. I suppose I was a bit hasty in associating him with the modern American (faux-)intellectual/entertainment snobbery-ists who I'm used to.
Re: Tolkien in Oxford
Well he was better than the upper class sympathisar who managed to miss the point and see the peoples of Mordor as the repressed masses whilt the elitist hobbits live the good life. (bit of class guilt seeping out there! )

That was awesome!!! He even mentioned my quote below! I love how quirky he was; he seemed to be in his head the whole time. And that guy with the glasses seemed scared of an escape to me. I laughed at the Gandalf for president pin crazy hippies....

Watched this a while back on the BBC archive. Here's a link for anyone interested- obviously you won't be interested in the Tolkien video as Chris has put the video up- but they have quite a lot of videos and stuff on other authors who you may be interested in!

Wow! I say: WOW! How do I miss these things? (All through the joy of watching this I had a sick feeling in my stomach thinking about what PJ did to Lord of the Rings - and what he's going to do to The Hobbit).

This is Tolkien somewhere. Though I'm not sure it's in Oxford.

hmm I think it was one angry lower middle class guy pretending to be working class. I think now he probably cringes when he watches himself.

Re: Tolkien in Oxford
I just watched the Two Towers one- apart from some of the illustrative artwork being horrific- weird pig faced orcs and the like, the actual content is surprisingly good for its obvious cheapness.

That's pretty funny. Who knew Graham McTavish hosted Tolkien docs in his pre-Hobbit days?

Peter Jackson comes to Tolkien’s Oxford
In his first-ever visit to the University where Tolkien first conceived Middle-earth a century ago, the acclaimed director tells how he’d feel if the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings author could see his blockbusting movie adaptations.

Reading that this was taken at Tolkien's home on Northmoor Road in Oxford but I can't confirm that offhand.
