An extract for your reading pleasure (grab a buckie or make a cuppa) from Judgement on Gotham. A Dredd/Batman crossover story with Simon Bisley on the art.
Little background. Judge Death (evil super villian) and psychotic head butting villian Mean Machine steal a dimensional jump, Death uses it and ends up in Gotham where he encounters Batman. Death's body is destroyed by fire and he is temporarily made incarnate. Batman finds the dimensional jump and accidently activating it finds himself in Mega City One where he is swiftly arrested. Here is Batman coming face to face with Mega City Law.

And as an added bonus, and because the idea makes me giggle every time, here is Death looking for a new corpse to inhabit and encountering Scarecrow.

A little bit more of Judge Anderson, from the story Helios.. Love the artwork in this story too.

Another beautifully illusrated Anderson story. This interpretation of Anderson visually is my own personal favourite. From Shamballa. Psychic outbreaks world wide have forced the Psi-Divisions of Mega-City to join up with their Sov equivelents (the story was published about the same time Gorbachev was talking Glasnost). The psi activity seems to be focused on Tibet so Anderson, a Professor and their Sov equivelents are sent to investigate.

Ok this is not for the squemish or those with a fear of dentists! From the best and most darkly funny origins story I have read, the origin of Judge Death from Young Death: Boyhood of a Superfiend.

Sport in the world of Judge Dredd is often very, very violent. And thanks to the worlds millions all being crammed into the various Mega-Cities around the globe it is televised to huge audiences. Top dog in pointlessly violent sports is Surfing. On hover surfer boards through Running Man style courses. And greatest surfer of them all is Australia's Chopper. Who having finally retired and got involvoed in a lot of good stuff about Dream Time and Aboriginal beliefs in the outback before being lured back to the sport because he cannot give it up, risking everything, throwing away his releationships he signs up for what is anticipated to be the most bloody Supersurf Contest ever, Supersurf11.
Comes with a disclaimer for graphic violence. Chopper: Song of the Surfer.

Still sticking with 2000ad- the comic all the above is from but not a Dredd world thing. This is Slaine the Horned God. And is here shamelessly becasue I think its beautiful. Some of Bisley's finest work in comics. Its based on Celtic mythology. In this excerpt Slaine King of the Sun People of Danu is descending into a magical cauldron to enter the underwolrd of the Earth Goddess at the behest of the Druids in order to get possession her array of magical weapons and goods to defeat Lord Weird, the old Horned God.

Thanks for the lengthy Dredd material, PT!

If the airport has free wi-fi, I hope to look at this tonight as I enjoy a nice bickie (bourbon) on the the rocks, awaiting my 8:00 PM flight home.

I can't wait to see him interact with America's favorite vigilante!

Decided comics are too great to make this thread just about Dredd and co. Once I work out how to change the thread title I will.
In the meantime heres some more of my fav comic stuff. A look at the Joker here. Firstly from one of the Jokers seemingly endless origin tales (and my favourite of them), 'The Killing Joke' with Bolland doing his usual amazing line work on the art.

And this is from Arkhum Asylum, written by Grant Morrison with McNeil providing the amazing visuals.

Some Doom Patrol. How to describe Doom Patrol? Well on the surface its a very traditional super hero comic. There's a group of superheroes and there's even a bald guy in a wheelchair Dr Xavious who runs the group. But Doom Patrol took a left turn somewhere from the DC universe it inhabits. Its team of super heroes have powers you would rather not want. Rebus is a composite being, both male and female, Dorothy the ape girl was a circus freak show act, and their HQ is a sentient street called Danny who can appear in any town or city in the world, oh and he's a transvestite street.
This extract features two of the team, Cliff (a racing car driver who suffered a terrible accident and woke up in a robot suit made by Dr Xavious and has, understandably, had a few problems since dealing with the fact), and Crazy Jane, probably Doom Patrols most complex character. Crazy Jane has multiple personalities, loads of them. And when one surfaces it comes with its own super powers. Problem is Jane had a nightmare childhood of abuse at the hands of her father and her personalities are complex and weird and often disturbing. In this piece Jane's mind has suffered huge damage after she rode the fifth horse of the acopcalypse through a painting that ate paris, and aided by Mr Nobody, who you can only see out of the corner of your eye, and a super villian with every super power you haven't thought of, she steered the horse into a dadaist level of the painting where it became an absurduty and turned into a rocking horse thus freeing all those trapped iin the painting, and Paris (did I mention the left turn?) By means not worth explaining Cliff has gone into Janes mind to try to help her out of the catatonic state resulting from this expercience. He finds her mind is represented as a subway.

The writer of the above Doom Patrol run (and the man responsible for the series revival from 1950's obscurity) is Scotish scribe Grant Morrison. Here's an extract from near the begining of his love letter to the New Age, The Invisibles (it nearly went under after a half a dozen or so issues- Morrison appealed to fans through the letters page to take part in sympathetic magic rituals including a mass wankathon to keep it going- it survived to the end of its 59 issue run).

In this bit the main character, young Liverpudlian tearaway Dane, is living on the streets and finds himself on the wrong side of the law after committing acts of mindless vandalism for kicks.

Er ... I've read Watchmen a couple times. Very Happy And I love Batman: Year One. But really it's my brother who's the comics geek in the family.

That said, Judge Dredd does sound pretty interesting. Isn't he from 2000 AD?

Yeah. Judge Dredd. Judge Anderson. Chopper, Slaine, all above somewhere, are all from 2000ad. As is this. The completely madcap Hewligans Haircut. If the artwork style seems familar to anyone hewlitt, the artist went on to greater things, Tank Girl for one, and he is also the animator and character artist for the band Gorillaz.

Actually a read of the last thing I posted, Hewligans Haircut, I feel may have some appeal, even to a Banks! (Although perhaps Orwell would enjoy it more, or maybe Wisey).

Oh what a lovely girl you are, having such respectable reading habbits. If I can only ween you off those unrespectable Beatles, I'd feel most satisfied... You know I thought they were actually singing beetles at first - and who ever heard of a respectable singing beetle? - and this being Forumshire where strange things occur - but then I found out they were actually Liverpudlians, which is even worse, them being just the kind of gnomes that no one likes! But for all that, I hold high hopes for you, you sweet girl! Very Happy

In an attempt to (probably vainly) spark some interest in comics here is the opening of I think one of the finest UK comics ever. V for Vendetta. Significiantly different from the film it easily stands on its own.
If people like I will put up the next part.

I'm afraid I've never been very interested in comics, Petty, apart from certain Disney comics Wink V for Vendetta is a great film, though, is that a very long comic? I've got quite a lot on my to-read and to-watch lists at the moment, but that's a comic I might actually be interested in.

10 parts roughly 30 pages an issue.
But well worth it if you can squeeze it in Ringdrotten.
