Notre Dame is burning
What a painful, sad day. I've never been to Paris, was saving it for that special someone. Now I'll never see Notre Dame. I need to get to Hagia Sophia before it collapses.

EDIT: a comment on the story- "The Cathedral survived French revolution ...but could not survive French renovation.." Probably someone smoking.

Re: Notre Dame is burning
It's so sad to see. I thought they would put it out fairly quickly, but...

Re: Notre Dame is burning
I saw it once back in my vagabond days. I'd arrived in Paris by train at something like 3am and was drawn to the cathedral as a safe place for a traveler to rest till dawn. I remember the changing shadows as the the first rays light played among the shapes....

I thought the thread-title was a joke or play on words. This is rather surprising. What a strange coincidence that a structure like this lasts for almost a millennia, and then burns up all of a sudden in 2019 while we're alive to watch it happen.

I still cant believe its real. they managed to save a lot of art though and the structure seems stable. its going to take billions of pounds to rebuild and probably decades, its always restoration work that destroys these buildings, like in Glasgow. they have electrical wiring and loads of solvents to clean the stone, all it takes is one cigarette or shortwire.
