Hm, my big issue with the Force Awakens was the storytelling, it was almost like a Star Wars pastiche, for all their failings at least the prologue tried something new.

And the "the character is instantly brilliant at something without any justification" thing Bungo mentions, is a big failing of modern day storytelling. Damn you, Moffat, it is spreading  Mad

Yeah, that's what made Luke compelling: other than being good at hunting wump rats (a skill I'm sure he came to honestly) he doesn't develop any powers without training.

Eh, I found the Holiday Special to be way too long and drawn out to be a laugh-a-minute kind of thing. Though watching Chewbacca's father masturbate to VR porn was pretty gripping stuff to be sure.

I've just finished reading through all the spoilers and reviews in this thread, and I have to say that I'm still solidly of the opinion that SW:TLJ is a delightful movie! I recommend seeing it!

Okay, saw it. though I always feel guilty going to see movies on Christmas. I won't offer any spoilers here.

- At least it wasn't derivative, so I didn't get annoyed the way I did with TFA.
- I did get annoyed at the rather slapstick comedy in the first half. It was all the same: here is something deep and moving, and then suddenly it isn't. Cheap laughs.
- Echo Bungo's thoughts on Rey: she still isn't earning it.
- Hearing the First Order theme, it's actually quite memorable....except that it doesn't sound evil at all. It should be the resistance theme.

Something to respond to in Bungo's spoilers, though it doesn't give anything away

Another one bites the dust! Or... sees the movie rather.

By the way, what the heck is up with the Han Solo movie coming out in May?

More thoughts after sleeping on it: between the humor and the imposed psychological explorations it felt a bit too much like fan fic.

I saw TLJ a second time last week, I enjoyed it more the 2nd time but my basic thoughts haven't changed-it's an overlong, thin storyline that throws away much of the mysteries and questions TFA posed in favour of treading its own path, much of the comedy felt like it was trying too hard and I'm still unsure about how Luke was written (though Mark Hamill was excellent in it) it's an enjoyable, competently made film with strong performances and occasional moments of brilliance, but a bit of a bloated mess than doesn't really gel with the story or tone of TFA.

Not sure I will revisit this a third time.

@Halfy Because they're political issues that populate our world. Injecting them, and Disney's stances on those issues into a science fiction/fantasy movie takes the viewer (me) out of the universe of the movie, and I start to watch the film aware of the political biases of the filmmakers. Shrugging

Didn't seem blatant to me at all. Judging a man's character by how he treats his horse is an old trope in westerns, and dislike of arms dealers cuts across all sides of politics; it's just a matter of who they are selling to.

Yeah I don't think arms dealing is a big ticket political issue these days. The focus is on other stuff. *coughsexscandalscough*

If anything, introducing the idea that both the Resistance and the... Empire? First Order? are able to fight each other by supporting a corrupting trade in weapon-trading is a way to introduce a morally complex issue into what, has been, a black & white space fantasy. And THAT can pull you out of the movie if you were expecting, you know, Star Wars.

That's not to say that I minded, really. It's pretty obvious if you think about it that war can benefit really bad people, and I thought it was fine that Mr. Del Toro's character got to introduce some doubt to Finn and the Resistance girl's views on the ongoing conflict.

somewhat. But modern online media has become patronizing in that it's all about being clickbait, which doesn't leave much respect for the reader.

Good point!

Even so, I was referring to the first individual quoted in the article. That person's comments were quite condescending I thought, and reminiscent for me of a broader tendency to patronize those who hold an opposite opinion to one's own concerning popular movies or TV.

guess who almost fainted in the snack-queue going into to see star wars a second time?!

me.. i did. My mom instantly "are you sick" and i was like " yeah... i think so" before i could even comprehend it myself, i ran to thebathroom, but i didn't puke... so weird, 15 minutes earlier i felt fine...

watched the movie though, mom didn't look during all the battle-scenes (especially the lightsaber fight between Kylo and Rey) and especially enjoyed the iron-spaceship-joke.

Well that must have been quite a distracting thing right before a movie.

It is! Is that an expression in Norwegian? (and if so, how do you say it?)

I once fainted at a concert, but I think that was because I had stood still for too long.
