Love the staircase, its a good idea & one which should be used more often here in UK but isn't, slowly getting very envious !

I can DIY, but it will be obvious I did it myself. I have ability but not much craft.

You'd definitely want to pick your boards carefully for that, and make the treads thick and no wider than necessary, but the amount of wood remaining after the cut-out should still be more than in a typical ladder rung.  

I've seen that style used in boat companionways (where it was probably mahogany or oak so splitting's not a problem) and in remote log cabins where the tread-planks were split or hewn from logs.  Using twice as much wood so you can do half as much joinery could  make sense when you're working with just a few hand tools.

Yeah that makes sense. That design also does away with the middle stringer. I just didn't care for it.

I like the 1st set of stairs. Should they be easier to get a heavy wardrobe up ?? Be easier coming down, just let the thing go, it can slide down under its own weight

Well, I sure have neglected this thread.

I've made some progress, certainly, but not nearly as much as I should have in the time it's taken.

Here's a little foundation for a pump-house/water-heater/propane-tank/whatever structure right outside the back side of the cabin.



I have power in the cabin now, a fridge, a front door, all that jazz. The main thing is to get the plumbing done now, and this is the first step towards doing that. Oh I bought a range for the kitchen and a big metal sink; but the kitchen cabinets and counters aren't done yet.

After all this waiting you should have called it a hot tub. We wouldn't know.

It is a daily struggle, trying to handle this thing by myself.

Maybe I'll get that girl I'm seeing to help, but I fear she lacks the skill to be of much use.

you know I was only the other day thinking of your wood in your hands & how far you had got with it ? I too, am very impressed at how your still at it !! This would wear a lesser man out !

She actually helped me a bit on the pump-house, which is coming along nicely. I had some time off this week and was able to finish the siding. (The rafter tails I left long on purpose, they will be cut straight later.)
