Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
Love the staircase, its a good idea & one which should be used more often here in UK but isn't, slowly getting very envious !

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
Thanks Az!
Of course, a big open window is all you need to get to the second floor.
I saw pictures of that style and just didn't like it very much. It seemed weak, structurally. Like I'd be worried about the stair breaking. I don't know.

David H wrote:It's not the width, it's the steeper pitch saves the space. The offset treads allow you to walk naturally up a much steeper pitch because the each toe doesn't have to dodge the alternate stair treads. And a steeper pitch means a smaller horizontal component, so less floor space lost under the stairs. Another way I've seen it done is with full treads all the way across, but with cut-outs on alternate treads for the toes to pass.

I can DIY, but it will be obvious I did it myself. I have ability but not much craft.

You'd definitely want to pick your boards carefully for that, and make the treads thick and no wider than necessary, but the amount of wood remaining after the cut-out should still be more than in a typical ladder rung.
I've seen that style used in boat companionways (where it was probably mahogany or oak so splitting's not a problem) and in remote log cabins where the tread-planks were split or hewn from logs. Using twice as much wood so you can do half as much joinery could make sense when you're working with just a few hand tools.

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
Yeah that makes sense. That design also does away with the middle stringer. I just didn't care for it.

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
It would look odd unless the cut-outs were rounded or had some other sort of detailing

Yeah, I've only seen them rounded.

I like the 1st set of stairs. Should they be easier to get a heavy wardrobe up ?? Be easier coming down, just let the thing go, it can slide down under its own weight

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
Well, I sure have neglected this thread.
I've made some progress, certainly, but not nearly as much as I should have in the time it's taken.
Here's a little foundation for a pump-house/water-heater/propane-tank/whatever structure right outside the back side of the cabin.
I have power in the cabin now, a fridge, a front door, all that jazz. The main thing is to get the plumbing done now, and this is the first step towards doing that. Oh I bought a range for the kitchen and a big metal sink; but the kitchen cabinets and counters aren't done yet.

{{ I'm just amazed and somewhat impressed that after all this time Forest still has it up! Thats being young for you I thought time and effort would by now have made him droop (don't worry Forest happens to the best of us after the 5th or 6th buckie) but no, just when you think Forest is down he pops right back up again to susprise you. }}

It is a daily struggle, trying to handle this thing by myself.
Maybe I'll get that girl I'm seeing to help, but I fear she lacks the skill to be of much use.

Re: The Great Cabin Erection!
She actually helped me a bit on the pump-house, which is coming along nicely. I had some time off this week and was able to finish the siding. (The rafter tails I left long on purpose, they will be cut straight later.)
