Well, if anything like the first chapter a year of study is warranted.

Though I still think a scene by scene rant though of the film trilogy would be just as much fun...

I can't promise that I'll have any commentary to add (having as much as I did during the original go around is especially questionable ) but I would like to see this happen and might be able to pop in.

And I can't promise I will ever get round to starting this up again but it would be fun...

Re: The Hobbit: A Chapter by Chapter readthrough, Chapter One: An Unexpected Party
I'd almost forgotten I'd started this thread, certainly forgot how much detail I went into! This was always something I'd been meaning to continue/return to at some point, but time got away from me, not sure I really have the time or mental energy to do this again though (at least not right now) but it would be a fun project.
This was that long ago??? I may have been a tad optimistic on my definition of 'soon'
Only 20 years until The Hobbit enters public domain, maybe we'll get back to it before then...
Imagine how long a read through of LOTR would take us instead

Did you stop reading the Hobbit or just stop making detailed notes?

Re: The Hobbit: A Chapter by Chapter readthrough, Chapter One: An Unexpected Party
Looking back I think I made some notes and questions for Chapters 2/3/4 and I did finish re-reading the book (I've read it a second time since then, and the graphic novel adaptation as well) but had some stuff going on in my personal life at the time so sorta hit a brick wall in terms of motivation then depression kicked me in the arse for a while. I pushed it aside as something I'd intended to continue ...and I guess I just never got back to it.
The chromebook I was using at the time broke so any notes I had made back the are long since lost to the mists of time. But I suppose this is a project that could be ressurected fairly easily (and a read through of The Hobbit is a far less daunting prospect than LOTR), the issue is now whilst I could probably find the motivation (maybe), I'm not sure I could find the time...

Re: The Hobbit: A Chapter by Chapter readthrough, Chapter One: An Unexpected Party
Speaking of a read-through of LotR, I do have the um erm study guide erm what is it called... *checks shelf* Hammond and Scull's A Reader's Companion that I have yet to crack, and a read-through would be a good excuse.
There are some... 62 chapters in the LotR by my count. One chapter every... fortnight? would be leisurely enough for most people to keep up with, I imagine. And if it took 124 weeks. Well, what else are we going to do? Watch Rings of Power? hahahaha

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

Re: The Hobbit: A Chapter by Chapter readthrough, Chapter One: An Unexpected Party
I have a copy of The Readers Companion as well (the 2008 paperback edition, a revised hardback edition was published in 2014) its a very interesting and detailed book full of insightful comments and notes about LOTR (and contains some previously unpublished writings as well) and I would certainly reccomend it, with the caveat that it isn't really a book I'd read through cover to cover more than once by itself, rather it works best read in concert with LOTR a chapter at a time/used for references.
So yeah a read through of LOTR would be fun and I'd certainly try to take part, though based on my previous attempts at starting a read through of The Hobbit, it would definitely be better suited to someone else running it
