You might be onto something sort of Figg- from what we know it was a place for some sort of ancestor worship, and the evidence of Cairns points to some sort of belief connecting the dead with the Earth) other cultures for example who thought the dead went into the sky left their dead out open to the sky, in Cairns they built things that looked like natural hills), which would make such places somewhere where the dead and the living can pass through the entrance/exit of Mother Earth.
