That's piss water to you!
Although I have been able to find some great local and craft beers in my short time on this earth. There is still hope for the US.
You've been blessed by your relatively recent tenure on earth. Circa 1990, there was nothing but Bud, Coors, Michelob, the now defunct Schlitz and every now and then a hanger-on such as St Pauli Girl. Basically all the same beer. The thought of selling alcohol in a grocery store was outlandish. Nearly all the bread was white, and if wheat, it was the spongy type of wheat. Almost no fresh herbs in the grocery, and salsa was in the bookshelf sized foreign foods section with soy sauce. Cheese was American, Cheddar, Swiss and Monterrey Jack. Parmesan was only sold in the powdered (ie 'grated') form.
Oh, it was a bleak, bleak landscape, and had been for decades. Anyone under the age of 30 has no clue how good you have it.

And then there were the generics.... A six-pack for 99 cents and often indistinguishable from the brands you listed (especially after the first six-pack )

Re: All things sporting [3]
Actually I don't remember touching the lite ones. The regular BEER beer on the bottom layer wasn't so bad though compared to anything else you could buy for twice the price. You got water and alcohol with a little bit of fizz and flavor added, and no money wasted on advertizing. It was the cheapest buzz around.

Re: All things sporting [3]
America was such a deprived place to live, and in many ways still is. I don't think there was ever a period in our history where you could get such women on our beer cans (unless you count St Pauli girl), though we've got our share in commercials.

Hmm....one line of beer for men, one for women, each with either cheese cake or beef cake as appropriate. The balance would call off the sexism attack dogs.

Re: All things sporting [3]
And as you finished a can you lined it up with the other empties, with the lovely ladies facing you, and then see as you get progressively more drunk if which one you fancy most changes over the course of the night
Feminists saw it as an outrageous sexualisation of women (they always do) but really it was a clever scientific experiment into the effects of beer goggles
Halfy- pretty poor- Tennants Lager, was and really still is, starter beer. Its only 4% or special is 9%. We used to use it to mix with 2l bottles of cheap cider- drunk about a third of that, top it back up with TL and start drinking it again. Repeat until you pass out or get arrested.

Re: All things sporting [3]
That was one of the most bizarre play calls I've ever seen. Why not give the ball to Lynch when he's averaging 4.3 yards per carry? I don't get it at all. Congrats to the Deflatriots.
NB Petty, I've noticed that a LOT of people from the UK seem to root for the Patriots if they pay attention to the NFL. Do you know why that is? I figured it was probably either because they win a lot, or because they've got England in the name. But I dunno.
Also, I thought the commercials this year were better than the last couple. And Missy Elliot was by far the highlight of the halftime show.

Re: All things sporting [3]
Are you talking about the final 2 minutes or some other time? At the end, when that close, I'd think you'd first try a hand off to power your way through rather than risk the interception that happened in a confined space.

Re: All things sporting [3]
Yeah, the end of the game. Wilson hadn't exactly had a great game to that point (the catch that put them in the red zone was pure dumb luck), but Lynch had been tearing up the defense as usual.
Re: All things sporting [3]
Ive no idea Eldo- I just picked them because I like the countryside there.
In my family my Dad and older brother are the big fans (my little brother was watching too mind you as I was chatting to him throughout the game) my Dad is a Redskins fan and my older brother follows Dallas. I tend to only watch highlights of matches as I find the live matches pretty dull and way, way to bitty.
My Dad and brother went over to a Redskins-Cowboys game about 8 years ago and ended up on the local news- it was the kilts.

That's an interesting connection! Was the game part of a larger trip or was that the whole trip?

Yeah....... ummm......I almost can't find words. I've got to guess that this play was called from the bench, that they were figuring that the defense would be expecting Lynch to run the ball, and that our offensive coordinator knows a hell of a lot more about the game than I do, but still WTF????

Actually I made a mistake- my brother is not a Cowboys fan he is a Broncos fan- they went to Denver for the match- and yeah the whole trip was organised around going to the game.

From George RR Martins Not a Blog;
Hopefully no Starks were hurt in the process of this Superbowl.
http://grrm.livejournal.com/Go Seahawks!!
Deflate the Pats!
LATER: life is meaningless and full of pain.
And that was beyond a doubt the worst play call in the history of the superbowl.
Hopefully no Starks were hurt in the process of this Superbowl.

From what I've been reading it sounds like these two guys were the real highlight of halftime.

The dancing sharks/beach balls/palm trees edged out even Robo-Lion. Still not as good as Prince's phallic guitar though.
Re: All things sporting [3]
Watching India v Pakistan but despite my recent attempt at a crash course in cricket I am still confused by a number of aspects of the game. I like how short the commercial breaks are though.

Also, can any of our Commonwealth peeps explain why the referee is dressed like a Mountie?

Re: All things sporting [3]
Cant help you here Eldo- cricket is what the English do instead of sport.
And I will stand by that on the basis that any game where no matter the score both sides can just agree to declare a draw because its started raining a bit or is getting a bit dark (buy some floodlights you cheap bastards!) is not a proper sport- you can tell proper sport because its participants would rather chew their own bollocks of than admit defeat, not agree to a draw And cucumber sandwiches don't count as actual food

Re: All things sporting [3]
I like the idea of a game that can last for five days, but apparently and unfortunately the World Cup uses a shorter format.
I was sort of relying on my knowledge of baseball to fill in the gaps, although it appears that the hitters (er, batsmen) do a lot more aiming of where they hit the ball (since they have a flat bat) than in baseball, and that the fielders pay a lot more attention to where they stand.
