Re: Orange is the new black
I'm a little over halfway through season two right now. It's definitely really good.
(While this is far from the best part of the show, I love the selection of songs for the end credits in each episode. They've got a great ear for music. )

Re: Orange is the new black
I watch Orange with my family and I've convinced them to give Game of Thrones a shot after we finish the current season of OITNB. That will be nice for me, too, since I've only watched the show sporadically so far (despite being there for the premiere of the first season, I fell away very quickly, but GOT has been growing on me lately).

I'm just glad that Season two doesn't focus on Chapman as much as season 1, I like the other characters wayyy more. Esepcially Ms. Rosa

Seriously. Chapman really bugged me when I first started watching, until I realized that the show was fully self-aware of how ridiculous (and annoying) her character is, and that it was just as interested in telling all of the other inmates' stories.
And Rosa has been a highlight of season two, I agree.
Re: Orange is the new black
yes.. she's very naive, but i feel sorry for her.. and her fiance, although he's a bit of a dick too... really all her family on the other side is a bit of a dick... like oooh it's so hard for them... also that radio program, what a stupid ass decision..
Re: Orange is the new black
Yeah she's great! My favorite is Red by far though. She's just so interesting and underratedly funny!!

Re: Orange is the new black
Watched the last couple of episodes of season two tonight. This show is really good, and I think I enjoyed this season even more than the first one. Episode 11 was pretty weird, but the season went out on a really high note. I'm glad (and a bit relieved) they didn't have enough cliffhanger.
Re: Orange is the new black
Watched the first couple of episodes of this- was very good.

Re: Orange is the new black
yeah, i know! it shows women as PEOPLE! and that guys can be A-HOLES and MANIPULATIVE and whatnot
Re: Orange is the new black
Orange certainly deserves all the praise it gets for its many nuanced and realistic female characters, but I've never understood the interpretation of the show as a "men oppressing women" parable. By the nature of the mostly female cast, many of the most despicable characters are themselves female. The show certainly doesn't seem fond of the institution of prison as it exists in modern America, but I haven't seen it presented as a form of patriarchal oppression. The show touches on themes of racial oppression more frequently, IMO.

The show goes out of its way to explore and humanize its characters, sympathetic or not, male or female, prisoner or CO. Pointing to a couple of the douchier guards and claiming the show is making a statement about gender-based oppresion through them is a really reductive way of looking at it. And it also completely ignores the various reprehensible female characters on the show (both prisoners and COs). Again, the show deserves credit for its nuanced female characters, and it wouldn't have achieved that level of nuance if it was caught up trying to portray the women as nothing but victims.
Re: Orange is the new black
I had not heard of any of the controversy over sexism, I just thought it felt honest and true at its core. Its a show about people, it just so happens a lot of them on this particular show are women.
I feel for example that its a million times better written than Sex in the City was regarding gender, which I found unwatchable.
