Nobody's come along to shoo them out? But then nobody shooed out the Occupy Wall Street encampment, and they kept raising a fuss and making noise. The occasional sword fight is probably much less annoying to the locals than marching up and down the street and shouting generally incoherent slogans.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Enjoyed your pics Mrs Figg I love all that Historical 'get together'. Shame their isnt more Historical events going on ? We are a country rich in history also. We romanticize about the past & love the dressing up bit & joining in but, it must have been a bleak, miserable time in Medieval 'anywhere'. I wonder if I like events like these because it looks simplistic ? Unlike todays modern life which is always full of problems. Plus, (& this is where my kids think Im weird ) the costumes look nicer Im fed up with seeing a big fat arse squeezed into black leggings with a belly pouring over the top & boobs like 2 full hot water bottles slapping together fighting to escape an equally tight, low cut top.

I had a nice day out with 2 of my daughters in Bexhill today. The museum was holding a Fun Day, Museum was very good !
This is called "The Tree of Tears". Each little bottle has a label with a mans name written on it to commemorate the ones who died in the 1st world war.
This God dam brute was inside the museum, right where I was told you cant take photo's I would have liked to get more snaps as there were Dinosaur bones from creatures that tramped across my neck of the woods.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
What got me was seeing the labels on the tree & the little drummer boy. So many signed up & lied about their age. A notice said X amount of millions died in the 1st WW & I thought of all those mothers never seeing their sons again, I felt sad, especially for the ones who's sons said they were 18 or whatever when really they were 14 or 15 !

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Its incredible to think of, the scale of it, the scale of the death in such a short space of time and as you say, the young age of so many that volunteered.
My mother has a story I wrote aged 12 at school (it won a school prize which is why she still has it) and the teacher had me to write an 'about the author' front piece in which I say I wanted to be in the Army. Which I did aged 12.
Had I lived at the time of the outbreak of WW1 I can quite imagine young me would have enthusiastically lied to get to go to war and be a part of it.
And that is a terrifying thought.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Its upsetting seeing headstones with the young lads ages.
"Private Joe Bloggs, killed in action, died, aged 17"
And when you see programes on TV with muddy, wet fields, bodies strewn everywhere, one, two, three young boys laying on top of each other, dropped into the mud from a spray of bullets or bayoneted to death, its sickening.

Um, wrenching it back to a more cheerful topic, wasn't Ringdrotten supposed to give us a detailed account of his trip to the western USA? We've only gotten teasers so far.

A local driftwood artist I know is starting to get some recognition. His sculptures are usually put together from hundreds or thousands of pieces of naturally shaped driftwood. His mind has always seen nature as a giant jigsaw puzzle that needs to be solved. I thought some of you might enjoy them.

Agreed Azriel- the sense of life in the horse and eagle ones in particular is startling.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
The horse and the eagle are some of his newer pieces, and they're even more spectacular in person when you can get up close and see how he's pieced it all together.
The giraffe is one of his early big animals when he was using fewer and larger pieces of wood. He's self-taught and you can really see him advancing, especially now that he's starting to get a decent price so that he can justify putting 6 months into a project. It's always fun to cruise by the shop and see what he's working on!
Here's the head of that giraffe:
And here's an earlier eagle:
His main stock in trade has always been furniture.
A few years ago he started making the bigger stuff to show off his craft. Now people are starting to commission them!

Self-taught? As if you can actually find someone to teach you how to bung together pieces of driftwood?
