Re: Tales of Home [5]
The beautiful Loch Eck-
its been really stunning there the past few weeks but unfortunately the unusually warm summer and increased water temperatures have led to an algae bloom for the second year running, which can cause skin problems and all sorts of unpleasantness and can be fatal to pets, sadly three dogs died last year from swimming in the loch.
Beautiful, but a touch deadly!

Re: Tales of Home [5]
I was at the beach today! It was beautiful, but too hot by far for a crabbit Scotshobbit
The bit where I was, if you turn away from the beach , looks like this- this is basically the farming land, this is where our local milk comes from.
Lot of butterflies about too
I may have fallen over drunk at this point-
See that gap in the background, where you have land on the left and the right and the gap in the middle?- sail out that and keep going and your next stop is America!

Re: Tales of Home [5]
If you mean real sailing via wind then I'm afraid you'll have to dip down to the tropical easterlies to cross the pond, but if you're talking steam ships, (and recalling the talk of Scottish shipyards) - would that be the common maiden route for many of the famous vessels of old?

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Seems easiest to show on a map.
The red dot is roughly where the picture was taken, the arrow the direction its looking in.
So really you have to go around the southern edge of Arran first before heading straight for America, but after that, assuming you dont sail to far south and hit Northern Ireland its open sea.
The famous ships (we still make them, just) were all made on the River Clyde which runs through Glasgow and then feeds out into the Firth of Clyde (a firth is basically a Scots word for a strait) as you can see if you build your ship in the yards in Glasgow, Inverclyde, Gourock or Greenock (thats all the really famous yards) the only way out is down the firth and out that gap in the picture.
So yeah, all the famous Clyde built ships go that way.
edit add- if you look at the first pic, the land to the right of the gap is the southern end of the isle of Bute, but the mountains you can see on the right edge of the pic are not on Bute, thats northern Arran, which if you notice on the map is actually quite a bit beyond Bute, giving you some idea of the size of the mountains on Arran (they always seem oddly closer than they are)- its a spectacular island, well worth the visit-

Those mountains look awfully high and snowy for what I think of as a pipsqueak island. I'd think it would be topheavy; flip over and sink.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Heading off to the International Air Tattoo tonight to be ready early tomorrow (can't be doing a 3 hour drive and an hour in traffic to be there in time for 9am).
Happy to do a little update with pictures as I did last year if anyone is interested?

Re: Tales of Home [5]
We are having one hell of a thunderstorm at mo, its been raging for 2hrs so far. The lightning is amazing ! but the thunder is ear splitting ! My cats are frightened of course & all are hiding behind the settee, they have all forgotten their annoyance of the kitten & 4 pairs of eyes are glinting at me as I look over the top of the settee

Wow! Stunning, Petty you are a lucky guy, great views, great scenery, all untouched and nay a burger van in sight, it beats the stony shores of Southsea by quite some distance.
Where exactly in Scotshobbitland do you live btw?

Batten down the hatches Azriel, and remember a sacred cat is a dangerous cat!
Malick- I am lucky enough to live in Argyll, on the west coast with the Gulf Stream passing by.
This vid has some nice views of the place in it, even though it seems to be an advert for our food products (well the crappy healthy stuff we sell to tourists anyway, obviously we keep the good stuff like deep fried mars bars and cold porridge thats been poured into an empty drawer then cut up into biscuits for ourselves )
And an artist talking about Argyll-

Very nice! (though it seems suspiciously sunny for Scotland), I live near the Hampshire Coast, but on Balance Argyll seems much much more interesting...
'Crappy Healthy stuff', can anything really be both crap and healthy? Other than Brussell Sprouts...

What a pretty dog! She looks sweet, too. Unfortunately most of the medium and large dogs I've known are either old and grumpy or just way too hyper for me.
