Re: Tales of Home [5]
Well Amarie I was just thinking about how I hear swear words in other languages (or dialects, e.g. British) and, to me, they carry very little weight. I can use them and not feel like I'm really upsetting anyone.
That's all I meant by the second-language thing. Perhaps Norc feels the same way about calling someone a little shit on a forum. When I first read it, however, it came across as rude and out-of-place in such a seemingly-relaxed discussion.
I remember when that troll guy called Norc a whale-c***. I thought it was rude, but mostly a laughably strange way to insult someone. Perhaps whale-c*** is a real insult somewhere, so I'm not sure how much that could affect someone. Obviously the second part is a very bad name to call people, but the combination with whale evokes strange aquatic-mammalian references.
Bleh, I should stay off the forum tonight. My brain is mush.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
As for the little shit thing i actually did regret it and appologiezed.
Though it is a cool picture, with all the phones and than one monk u refuses to use a phone, like thats so me, i don't have a smart phone.
On another note, we have snow now.
Clearly this is a cultural thing, but u didn't handle it very well either. Sorry for having an opinion and not letting u just walk across me and and call me naive, ignroant, disrespectful and what not. I thouhgt better of you before too, lance, even when u took the pictureLancebloke wrote:Problem is Nora, you go in all guns blazing and you have again just now. Saying that that 'kind of rudeness is acceptable' is very belittling, like you think you are better. That isn't respectful at all as isn't resorting to yet more insults such as 'betraveled ass.' Yet again very grown up of you.
Annoying thing is I can see you point of view and that maybe that kind of thing shouldn't just be acceptable, I have removed the picture from my post because of that.
But when it comes to the manner in how you have put your point across Nora, don't think you have gone about it well and I had thought better of you before.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Well snow is nice. But isn't it summer?
I don't have a smart phone either, I use the same old model that Walter White has in Breaking Bad.
Yeah I did see the regret you posted. No worries Norc, I was just musing on the subject of swear-words.
I didn't have the temerity to try out some English swears when I visited distant relatives in England, but I wonder what the reactions would have been. (They were an older couple after all!)
P.S.
Norc reminds me of my sister sometimes. She's nothing alike really, but they both swear explosively online at times.

Norc - I don't expect you to hold your opinion and challenge me or anyone. I just don't think you went about it well. And maybe I didn't either.
In classic petty/Figgy tradition, think it about time we moved on from this one. Clearly not something we are going to see eye to eye on so best if we call it quits.
Re surveillance, the train carriage I am sitting on has 2 cameras and I have so far been through 2 stations where I could see 4 cameras on the platforms. There are definitely 2 or 3 or the road I walk to get to the station and then canary wharf has loads as does my actual office building.
I think in this day an age in the U.K. They are both a plague and a necessity. If someone gets mugged the first thing everyone asks is where the CC TV footage is. If you are taking a long journey you take a look at the motorway cameras to see if the delay is really that bad.
(Next station had 8 cameras!)

So in a culture where a picture could earn you lunch, what had you done that warranted such notoriety? I suspect it was sailing related?

Only indirectly sailing related. I happened to have been staying on the Af Chapman, an old sail-training ship that's moored in the heart of Stockholm as a traveler's hostel, and was just checking out when I noticed what I thought was a lost couple, so I went over and offered to help. They turned out to be reporters looking to interview an interesting traveller as a story to highlight what the ship brings to the city. I guess they figured I'd do...

That's easy. It's pitch black 24/7 during winter so you get depressed, and bright light 24/7 during summer so you can't sleep. Slightly more variation between night and day here in West Fjorlandland and a bit more difference when you get to Blue's place.

Forest- I doubt if I'd have gotten interviewed if I'd been wearing my bear-face at the time.
Norc-
What I probably said originally was something like, "This location is incredible!" and they spun it a little bit as they translated into Swedish.
That's the advantage of interviewing foreigners: they're like puppets. When you translate their words you can make them say almost anything you want!

Oh I hope not! I've still got a crop to grow!
Imagine if you're whole year's income could disappear with the weather...

Re: Tales of Home [5]
That happened here once... Well, last year. The winter was very cold and there was little to no snow covering the ground for isolation so a lot of farmers had to re-plant crop and grass for their cattle/sheeåp
