Figgy was (somehow) right. It is Hadleigh castle and pictures at the end are the views along the Thames that the castle would have been protecting.

Great pictures everyone. I hope to visit the beautiful places where you live someday. Maybe when the cranberry ship comes in. Until then, I really appreciate the landscape pictures.

Very nice, looks like it has taking a good pounding it some point though- or has it just collapsed over the years from weather?

We all like fish, but that one we let go. Bass season is not open until mid-June. Always a successful day when the kids catch fish.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Shame to let a nice one like that go, but it's good to play by the rules.
I had no idea there was a 'season' on varieties of fish. No doubt they follow a breeding cycle like deer, etc. If it ever comes up, now I know.

City furballs!
You need to come across to Scotland and go salmon fishing when they are running- bring a huge fat wallet with you mind you for the fishing licenses for salmon rivers, unless you fancy a free and risky midnight guddle!

Re: Tales of Home [5]
It is actually the safest way for that type of fish to be held. Touching the sides affects their protective slime. Grabbing them by the lip and turning them horizontally, as you see some people in fishing tournaments do, puts unbelievable stress on the spine of the fish. Stuffing your fingers in their gills is bad for everyone. Grabbing them by the lip (where there are no nerves) and holding them vertically is the safest and least stressful for the fish. We released it right after the photo, and it splashed me as it took off in a fury. No harm to the fish. Had it been another variety in season though, it may have ended up in the frying pan.

Is Bass the fish that can grow to immense size? I seem to remember they can grow into monster big fish.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
I think it would be nice for catch and release to come up with a fish hook that isn't actually a hook. I'm thinking of something that when it gets bit, it suddenly pops into a size that fills the mouth so the fish can't let go.
No doubt it's an unworkable idea, but would be nice for the fish.

well, i am just thinking good bye fingers and that if it twitches you'd loose it at once though i don't see the point of fishing if you're just letting it go..Hillbilly wrote:It is actually the safest way for that type of fish to be held. Did you ever play tag?
Did you ever play 'stick' with Leopold?
In neither case is the thing caught taken to be eaten.

I told you already- guddle 'em. No hooks involved. There is no friendlier method of fishing, its even gentle, well right up till the last flick!

Forgive my lack of knowledge of Hairballogy*. But unless you and your friends played tag by hiding a hock in your lunch and holding the lucky/unfortunate finder under water for a while, then I don't really see how this compares. And I don't want to know about 'stick', but I choose to believe it is more related to Petty's fish hugging method.

quirmypants- Mrs Figg
You shouldn't be getting quirms in your pants if you are doing it right!
Mind you can get a bit tense when you first slip your hand in to the unknown and unseen depths and give your first tentative tickle.
Might be a pike and it'll be the last thing your fingers will try to tickle!

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Trout tickling and quirmypants- I'm not sure where to even start.
Figgs-the particular species my daughter has there might get to 70 cm at the very largest, the one she caught is about 45 cm and considered nice sized for this area. You may be thinking of river catfish, which may grow to be large as a human. Also, lake sturgeon can get to be quite large.
As far as the hook halfy, some people will flatten the barb so as to make it easier to take out. If you ever want to leave the city and try fishing let me know. That even goes for you NABS.
Norc-The teeth on that particular fish are very fine, making it safe to grab it by the lip. As far as why fish if you're going to let it go...
1. You're never sure what you will catch, so that particular fish wasn't in season.
2. You seen her smile right? That pretty much made the day for me.
3. Having the power of life or death over another creature...buhahahahahahaha

Re: Tales of Home [5]
well, hillbilly, i was partially ironic when i made that statement, i hope u know that even though i am a firm believer og eat what u catch, i get the whole release thing because the one cannot fish cod if they're under 40-50 cm legally.

You must not own a dog, or you'd intuitively know what 'stick' is. You throw a stick and the dog goes bounding after it. They find this to be endlessly fascinating. Closely related to 'ball' :
Though typically you play nice.
(Thanks to Petty for discovering this little gem)
