All this Fjordlandian music reminds me of the theme from Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac on NPR.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Original tune is Scottish. Then adapted as a hymn, then by a Swedish folk singer. Interesting history.

I dont know that one but the style of singing is very familiar in Scottish folk.

Unless you mean Scottish folk don't usually sing that nicely because they're blotto. But even I recognize the Scottish folk music ornamentation.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Particularly songs from the north and the islands.
Took a walk down to the beach this evening.
This tree is just down the road from me, but looked nice now its got all its leaves back-
Garden full of palms on the seafront-
There are loads of wild flowers along the grassy banks just above the shoreline-
Some beach!
Now this is our towns great controversy.
Either its a racial slur against black people, or it predates the laws in the US of the same name and is an early from of advertising by a man of that name who had a yard across the road from it.
All I know is my brother and I used to delightedly watch out for it every time we passed in car or bus, and it was not until I was an adult I became aware of any racial connotation's to it (weird racist US laws not being a big topic of debate) to us it was just a magical crow that lived on the beach and turned to stone in daylight.
Some more beach-
Trees, grass, beach and sea. Im just spoiling you now.
A saltire flying, nearly. I always feel the flag is too small for such a big pole.
Some more flowers growing in old stone walls for Azriel-
The view from the end of my road, that hill is the back end of the golf course, thats the top of the club house bottom left-

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Beautiful pictures. I have to hop on a subway and ride 1.5 hours at least to get to the beach, and it isn't anywhere near as beautiful.
I suspect that something that would be seen as racist in the US would be no more than a pun in UK. Around here many things are racist depending on who says it.

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Oh thankyou petty
I also live on top of a golf course, I went for a walk to the Drs today & this is the route I take there & back.........
It looks ok now but, when we had the awful winter storms & flooding, it looked like Jurassic Park ! full of water pools & no path.
Then I found these 2 statues behind some hedging in a car park of the East Sussex County Council offices, Ive walked past them most days for years & never knew they were there !
Theres no wording for these & each has a stone rose in front of each statue, I dont even know who they were ?

I'm beginning to believe Petty when he complains about the grass in New Zealand. It just seems greener in the UK than anything I've seen.

Those look very much like a type of flower that may also be found in the area where I grew up. We call it "Blåklokke", and I believe it's called Bluebell in English. It's a beautiful flower, and I'm always glad when I happen upon it as it reminds me of my childhood
Those statues look like LotR set pieces, azriel, very cool

Re: Tales of Home [5]
That looks like a lovely walk Azriel.
I find those statues and stone fascinating.
Musing and speculating wildly on them my first impression was Denethor and Boromir, and Im not sure thats not too far off.
The one on the left has a sceptre, usually associated with Kings, and he wears a crown.
But the younger figure on the right is also crowned, but he bears a sword not a symbol of office, so Id guess at heir and Prince. And a bit of impetuous one by the looks of him receiving some solemn advice from father who his wagging a finger in his general direction.
(the finger waggling could be symbolic however, in astrology the finger he is pointing with is associated when pointing with Jupiter, which is King of the Gods, it also has associations with the idea of Law)
The rose stone has loads of meaning. The rose on gravestones often means beauty and wisdom. A closed rose means 'cut off before life could begin' and an open rose means 'cut off in full bloom'.
That one however looks more heraldic and the heraldic rose is full of occult potential. Its linked to the feminine principle and to the Goddess Diana through the connection with her to Venus (whose movement through the heavens mirrors the pattern of the shape of the rose petals).
Can anyone take a stab at the date of the subjects based on clothing?

Ringo, they are what we call bluebells & smell heavenly ! When they are in bloom in the woods, it looks just like a rich blue sea.
And Petty, how observant & informative you are. That was really interesting what you said. makes me want to go back & grill a few surfs at local office to find out more ! The 1st thing I thought of when seeing the Roses was, Tudor but, their clothes suggest a little earlier ? or at least at the beginnings of the Tudor dynasty ?
King Alfred ?........ on 2nd thoughts ?

Re: Tales of Home [5]
Yeah it almost certainly is a Tudor Rose. It has the inner and outer pattern of the petals, which indicates the two white and red roses combining (representing House of Lancashire -red rose- and the House of York- white rose) after the War of the Roses.
So that would be what 1485-ish?

It is the view from the 33rd floor down some stairs. As much as I am not particularly great with heights I look down there quite a lot as it seems endless....
Re: Tales of Home [5]
that's cute. when i was on a class trip in 2010 we went to the salt mines in Krakow. (not my picture) it was pretty far down and i don't know if this is on the top..
Re: Tales of Home [5]
A picture I took this morning with my phone. It doesn't quite do justice to seeing it live.

I like that picture Amarie, the more I look at it the more I like it. What does it for me is, that beam of light hitting the ground, on the right hand side, between mountain base & roof
