Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
I am obviously hoping for a YES, but honestly, I have no idea how it will go.
I do think the polling is out and has been since the start, not sure which way its out, but polling companies rely quite heavily on comparing votes to previous votes, and there is no precedent for this or previous to compare to.
Some people who voted SNP at the last election are voting No, traditional Labour voters are voting YES. Its not at all along party lines.
My hunch however is that the winning margin will be at least 60/40.
Its just I dont know for who!
All I can do now is make my vote and hope my fellow country folk vote the same way and then wait and see.
By Friday morning we will know the answer.

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
Will they be doing early exit poll forecasting like they do here in the US, or will we have to wait for an official count?

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
Well the polling closes at 10pm on Thursday- the count will take all night, mainly as all the votes need to be helicoptered or ferried in from far flung rural communities and the islands.
However if there is a clear swing by a large margin to one side or the other that should become apparent before morning.
There will also be exit polls, where they ask people how they voted when they come out the polling station, but as its up to individuals if they want to say. But they might give some indication early one.

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
In a contest like this, it's mostly going to come down to which side is more effective at turning out the vote rather than changing people's minds.
I'd think that would make exit polling a pretty good indicator of how things will turn out by a couple hours after people get off work.

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
Well about a million folk have registered to vote who normally don't.
Most of those are most likely working class and unemployed as th emiddle and upper class tend to vote anyway and are already registered.
Its a hunch, but I reckon if you don't normally vote in elections and you have gone to the trouble to register and choose to vote this time you are more likely to do so to vote for a positive. So my gut feeling is the bulk of the extra million voters are going to be YES voters.

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
That sounds right to me. The newly registered voters were a large part of how Obama got his landslide victory in his first election, and they're often from demographics that get missed in the pre-election polling.
I'm definitely going to be watching the results Thursday evening. Who knows? Maybe we'll want to secede from the United States next year if Congress can't get their act together.

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
I'm hoping for an entertaining evening of news coverage. Is that really old guy who does elections (Dimbleby?) still in business? He was great in 2010.
Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
Yeah Dimbelby is still going strong.

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
Glad to hear it. I plan on setting up with a livestream on Thursday night and watching the results and speculation come in. I have work at 7 AM the next morning so I can't stay up too late, but with the time difference and all I should be able to see a good deal of coverage.

Petty - I think the nature of this vote has drawn many more people out than a regular 'here we go again' election. I would say, from the various pieces of news coverage, that No voters are just as passionate as yes.
Tomorrow is the big day!!

If the Vore is Ys, will that mean the civilized folk of the Commonwealth will have to conquer you all over again to retake the oilfields and fisheries, Petty? A No vote would make things easier, you know!

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
Lance there is no doubt of the passion and enthusiasm n both sides. Its been nothing if not passionate this debate- and frankly a marvel to behold.
I never thought I'd say the day when politics was the number one topic of the working class and the poor again.
But engagement has been immense in meetings, debates, and just engaging with neighbours and friends.
I actually think a genie is out now regardless of the result. Someone recently (think it was on Newsnight) pointed out that Scotland currently has one of the most politically knowledgeable and politically engaged populations anywhere.
We've spent two years in debate scrutinizing our country, from its morality, political insituitions to its finances. And its going to be a lot harder afterwards no matter what for the political classes to pull the wool over peoples eyes.

Re: FREEDOM!!!! [3]
In response to increased claims in the Unionist media of intimidation, law breaking ect by YES supporters the Scottish Police Federation have released a statement, which I give in full-
'MEDIA RELEASE
The Scottish Police Federation represents all police officers in the ranks of constable, sergeant, inspector and chief inspector, police cadets and special constables, over 18,500 people, 98% of all police officers in Scotland.
To: News Editor
Date: 17 September 2014
Subject: Independence Referendum
In response to increased press reports and comment implying increased crime and disorder as a consequence of the Independence Referendum Brian Docherty, Chairman of the Scottish Police Federation said;
“The Police Service of Scotland and the men and women who work in it should not be used as a political football at any time and especially so in these last few hours of the referendum campaign.
As I have previously stated the referendum debate has been robust but overwhelmingly good natured.
It was inevitable that the closer we came to the 18th of September passions would increase but that does not justify the exaggerated rhetoric that is being deployed with increased frequency. Any neutral observer could be led to believe Scotland is on the verge of societal disintegration yet nothing could be further from the truth.
Scotland’s citizens are overwhelmingly law abiding and tolerant and it is preposterous to imply that by placing a cross in a box, our citizens will suddenly abandon the personal virtues and values held dear to them all.
At this time it is more important than ever that individuals be they politicians, journalists or whoever should carefully consider their words, maintain level heads and act with respect. Respect is not demonstrated by suggesting a minority of mindless idiots are representative of anything. One of the many joys of this campaign has been how it has awakened political awareness across almost every single section of society. The success enjoyed by the many should not be sullied by the actions of the few.
Police officers must be kept free from the distractions of rhetoric better suited to the playground that the political stump. If crime has been committed it will be investigated and dealt with appropriately but quite simply police officers have better things to do than officiate in spats on social media and respond to baseless speculation of the potential for disorder on and following polling day”
ENDS
The underhanded attempts in the last few days to smear the YES side is another unpleasant example of the desperation of the NO campaign in the last two weeks. But good to see the Police are not taking any crap on this one.

It will obviously be be updated on news sights and such, and by Petty here perhaps, but as for watching it live a BBC live link is probably best?
This usually works well for me.

The BBC's website will most likely offer streaming coverage. That's how I've watched past elections.

Ah, that might very well work too then.
Just collecting a couple of options for the top of the page.
