Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
Hi Sin, good to see you about again.
Things are improving slightly on ToRN I would say- mainly because TH films are so poor and even ToRN cant maintain the pretence otherwise on mass as they used to do with LotR's.

Good point, wasn't he working on his own forum at some point?

Yes, after Bree went down he was thinking of starting one. I am guessing it never came to fruition or I am sure he would have been back to provide us all with a link.

Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
I seem to have crabbited a thread on ToRN by bludgeon them to death with all the evidence for why Beorn is rubbish in DrOS.
Maybe I should leave them alone again for a bit.

Is "leave them alone for a bit" code for "wait until my ban expires"?

Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
Should be easy to find, its the one with me presenting piece after piece of unremitting irrefutable evidence that Beorn is crap in every way from looks to his characterisation. And them getting huffy about it.
(And some typically funny and insightful inputs from our very own Lore Tower resident Elthir)

Sounds fun, but I always get lost navigating in the trackless wasteland that is TORn. I couldn't find anything just now. Could somebody please post a topic title/pathway, or better yet a link?

Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
Twas nothing much Figg- they said Beorn in bear form looked bear shaped- I put up some comparison pics and pointed out in detail all the bits that are not like a bear at all, which was all of him.
And then I pointed out that he looked like Beorn the Hedgehog as a human and his personality had been removed and replaced by one scene of fan fiction exposition and threatening to squeeze a mouse.
Someone got a bit iffy and took exception at my avatar and decided if I liked current Who I could not comment.
And someone else said that if they had made Beorn when human look like the book he would have looked just like an 80's porn star, I can only assume they were very fond of bears in the 80's.

Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
I noticed while watching that article my confusedmatthew that Beorn looked exactly the same size as Thorin in closeup, theres no sense of scale, ie you dont get the impression Beorn is a giant, he looks weeny. Poor Beorn, he is such a wonderful character in the book. and they reduce him to a sub par Wolverine with 70s porn star sideburns.

In response to Petty:

Quick question...
Are you ever not complaining?
I love it!
Edit:
Once Elthir joins in it just gets better!
Elthir:
"Losing the bear tracks:
Well, no one is claiming that Jackson's character doesn't look, in some measure, like a bear... if I walk the right way and mess my hair up, I can look somewhat like a bear too. When I'm doing that do I look like a bear *at all*?
Yes
My question is/was: when you [anyone] read The Hobbit, did you image Beorn as a bear? A regular bear as far as the shape is concerned."
Someone give the man an award!
Elthir:
Anyway, apologies, but I feel beorn-again when I'm talking Beorn again.

Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
Yes, I think both Petty and Elthir carried themselves admirably! (I do wish Elthir had brought the discussion around to bear colours though. Somebody brought that up earlier in the discussion, and nobody jumped on it. )
That was a gem, but it needs be needs to be set:
Petty: Wow....That was meant to look like a bear was it?
tsmith675: Quick question... Are you ever not complaining?
Petty: Mmm ...is that a trick question?
That's walking the line beautifully Petty!

I believe it's the same Elthir, yes. {{{I also believe he has another pseudonym he uses regularly on other Tolkien forums, but don't tell him I said that! }}}
Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
I'm still of the mind that I would have been perfectly fine with them cutting Beorn for a one movie treatment.

Re: Somebody from ToRn tell it how it is
Yeah, I feel that if they didn't have a use for Beorn, he should have gone. Someone (can't remember their name) on TORn made the point that this would create a plothole of how the Company was able to resupply and continue their journey after losing everything to the goblins. I'd acknowledge that this is a possibility, but I think I'd rather they recapture their stuff on the way out than having a five minute interlude at Beorn's that serves no greater purpose in the film than appeasing the fans.

There's no doubt in my mind. He punned circles around his opponent as only a true Loremaster could do!
