Re: The Riddle-Game
Thanks Lance!
I'm having a hard time thinking up a riddle right now so if someone else wants to jump in feel free.

Re: The Riddle-Game
You could always just do a question like Bilbo did. It's within the rules.. kinda..

Re: The Riddle-Game
It most certainly is not!
Speaking of said rules, the answer to my riddle was not a Vicuna wool onesie!
However, because you guys are a bunch of yahoos, I will ignore this infraction, give the answer, and pretend Lancy answered correctly.
It was, of course, a pair of woolen gloves.

Re: The Riddle-Game
Well, you can blame Tolkien for that one. He set the precedent.

Re: The Riddle-Game
Strictly the 'authorities' on riddle rules did not give Bilbo a pass on this one- it is not a riddle- but they do apparently agree that once Golllum accepted the question as such and agreed to answer it then it was fair.

Re: The Riddle-Game
I think the average reader, myself included, agrees that Bilbo did take advantage of Gollum to win the game. However, as the stakes for Gollum were just a little bit lower than Bilbos, we figure that it balances out in the end.
Here's another riddle:
Rough and squishy, I'm all mixed around.
People take me and shake me, and throw me in the ground.
At first I am soft but, like a good riddle,
I get harder and harder as you sit and twiddle.
Under your feet, I work to keep you safe.
But put me 'round your boots, and you'll sink to your grave.

No, that's from my leisure time spent as a classic-era gangster.

Re: The Riddle-Game
I think that might certainly have been the subconscious answer.

Re: The Riddle-Game
Sorry.... I didn't realise I was due.
Firstly... is it wind Figgy?
Now to think something up.....
You can see in to my past,
But I am here in the present.
I could burn you all to a crisp,
But ill leave that to a cousin.
I am the essence of life,
The destroyer of world's.
But even in my greatness,
Will never have a child.
One day I will be gone
With one last show of power
But you will never know
For me, your life is but an hour.

Re: The Riddle-Game
Since I'm pretty sure I got that right, but am heading off to run a 3 hour lab, followed by driving 5 hours to run a 40th anniversary for a hang gliding site, followed by a week of teaching 3 hour classes, I'd better fulfill my obligation lickety split.
You'd say I was cute,
whenever we meet;
Snuggle right up to me
in winter, for heat;
Yet tomorrow's next dinner
I may be the meat.

That could be almost anything, depending on your personal snuggling and dining habits....

Re: The Riddle-Game
Figgy got the conventional answer, though I'd just say 'sheep', with incarnations of live animal, skin, meat.
