(didn't see that coming did you Mrs. Figg, heheh).
And what is this nonsense about not putting up a riddle!?!?!
If you don't want to play the riddle game, then don't play. You can always go hiking back up the tunnels and play with the goblins instead.
But if you do want to play, then you have to obey the actual rules, which are that out of politeness, decency, and the will to not be eaten you MUST put up a riddle after correctly answering some other person's.
This halfway involvement is like some kid asking others if he can play soccer, and then running away with the ball as soon as they pass to him.

So here's a little riddley bit of prose.
Two adventurers traveling down a mountain.
One skipped and sang with happiness,
the other stepped downward with heavy tread.
Two friends crossing a sunny field.
With wandering steps went one,
pausing to smell wildflowers and look for frogs.
The other kept an eye on the horizon,
set his feet resolute in line as to a march.
Two companions found a lake.
"A swim I shall take, for the water is cool!" called one.
"Far too deep to cross, I will keep to the shore," was the other's reply.
And so they parted.
hmm difficult. the first sounds like childhood and the second adulthood.
I was reading this literally, and couldn't cipher it out. Figgs went deep, and I think should win by default for a plausible and satisfying answer.
(no, you're not getting a riddle from me. I'm sticking to the rule book. )
well at least some people appreciate me

Ravens, Crows or Seagulls?- Mrs Figg
Sorry, none of the above. But you are sort of the closest yet without being in any way actually right, if that helps any.

Re: The Riddle-Game
That is a tricky riddle Petty.
I find "our eyes are spies" to be particularly frustrating.
Why would one need to single out the "eyes" of something as the "spy." If, say, a spy were spying, his whole being would be a spy. If its just the eyes that are spying, that suggests that whatever the eyes belong to have another purpose or intention.
It could all be quite figurative in which case no actual "eyes" would be involved at all. And the "royal decree" isn't really illuminating anything for me either. Are we talking about some British thing of which I might not have knowledge? Or is this taken from Tolkien, or is it a metaphor for something.
Answering riddles isn't as fun as asking, but this one is annoying me quite a bit. I need to get some sleep and thing about it again tomorrow.

And eyes because these things are often associated in general with their eyes, but they do also have ears and other senses!
