Oh my gosh Azriel, I am this close to adding a two-in-a-row answer limit to the rules list!azriel wrote:

And no, Elendil is not the answer, still in the ballpark though.
(well gif'd)

Star of Elendil.
I'm guessing the firmament claptrap is about Arwen, the evening star.

Actually I should say Aragorn/Elessar, whom I associate with the Star of Elendil.

Re: The Riddle-Game
Nope, no-one has gotten it yet.
Here's a hint, as I may not have used the best source for translations.
"star" rather than "spark" would be more appropriate.
Edit: This riddle is very cryptic, but yet it still should work.
Second Edit: I changed the first line to something not-so-vague! It had read "A shield against the dark" before. As we all know, good riddle writing means including meaning in every line!

Re: The Riddle-Game
Yes! Well done.bungobaggins wrote:Is it Gil-galad?
That is quite a short answer, but it is correct.
Here I'm going to explain for the heck of it.
Gatherer of the second house,
Gil-galad was king over the Noldor (the 2nd group of elves) in middle-earth.
A spark of bright light,
My Tolkien Companion thingummy had this as a translation for his name
The last of that which sought to hold,
Against the foe a fiery fight.
I really just meant here that he was the last elf-king that really actively fought against evil forces. The ones that followed were rather wishy-washy about it. (Fading, i suppose).
Staunch against the mortal foe,
He did fight Sauron in single-combat after all! And was killed...
Suspicious of the molten skill,
He called for caution against the wiles of Sauron amongst the Elves of Eregion
Heralded by the wise of lore,
to whom was passed the firmament.
Elrond, basically the Lore-master, was his herald during the war against Sauron, and it was to Elrond that Gil-galad passed his ring Vilya, the ring of Sapphire, of Air.
Whew, anyway, your turn. Next time this comes around to me I'm going to do stone, or toast, or strawberries or something.

Re: The Riddle-Game
"Suspicious of the molten skill"
This was what pretty much turned me in the right direction. I just had to remember who was wary of Annatar. Once you changed "spark" to "star" that made the only possibility Gil-galad.

Okay, this was the best I could do. I'm not a wordsmith like Forest, and I'm sure someone will guess it right away, but whatever. The game must proceed!
Friend of immortals
A link between worlds
Finder of the celestial path
Like the ancestor of old
Water flows through the veins
Bringer of all we know

Re: The Riddle-Game
Well... I don't know about guessing right away. I, at least, am rather stumped with this one.
I mean, friend of immortals, but not an immortal? the link, the star-path part with water flowing and all that. It's a good riddle in my opinion! I might change my mind once I find out the answer.
This is going to be way off, but Ulmo?
(I'm guessing the answer might be something more mundane, but oh well).

Re: The Riddle-Game
Those bloody raccoons are a metaphor for my mind right now.
Well anyway, Tolkien?
I don't see how his veins could flow with water though.
You would think that "veins" would be a metaphor for streams and rivers, or some such. The sea is literally the link between worlds in Tolkien's writing, but who knows.
I mean, you're apparently careful to avoid giving the answer a gender, which suggests it might not be an individual at all. However, all the social-relations terminology (friend, like the ancestor of old, etc.) seems to suggest a person despite that.
P.S.
The answer had better not be the special hydro-cooling system you installed in your computer or something.
P.P.S.
The lack of punctuation has me confused as to whether the lines are all taken singly, or whether "Like the ancestor of old" refers to the water flowing in veins, or the finder of the path.
