Re: Music [2]
Working on music.
ps. a lot of the time spent working on music is actually spent waiting for other people to finish their parts.

Yeah, I've heard sitting around waiting for other people to do stuff is not an uncommon experience in orchestras.
Is the euphonium particularily underused in classical music then?

First some background info on the euphonium:
The euphonium is a conical-bore, baritone-voiced brass instrument. The euphonium derives its name from the Greek word euphonos, meaning "well-sounding" or "sweet-voiced" (eu means "well" or "good" and phonos means "of sound", so "of good sound"). The euphonium is a valved instrument; nearly all current models are piston valved, though rotary valved models do exist.
And in case some of you were wondering: What is the difference between a euphonium and a baritone. Here's the answer. ('Cause im bored with people calling my instrument (the euphonium) a baritone)
The euphonium is part of the family of brass band instruments. It is sometimes confused with the baritone horn. The euphonium and the baritone differ in that the bore size of the baritone horn is typically smaller than that of the euphonium, and the baritone is primarily cylindrical bore, whereas the euphonium is predominantly conical bore. The two instruments are easily interchangeable to the player, with some modification of breath and embouchure, since the two have identical range and essentially identical fingering. The cylindrical baritone offers a brighter sound and the conical euphonium offers a mellower sound.
No not really. In a windband a euphonium is just another "filler" to make the sound rounder. But on the otherhand, in a brassband, the euphonium is the soloist instrument! I play in both windband and brassband. There is no euphoniums in orchestras or bigger ensembles (YET!! They used euphs in orchestras a couple hundred years ago), BUT, I am teaching myself to play the trombone better now when I am at home, so I can maybe join in on other ensembles. Like the orchestra or something in the future!
The euphonium are being used in military bands as well. As a euphonium player in military bands, you will perform in concert band, ceremonial band, low brass quartet and/or various other ensembles based on your skills and the needs of the band. Euphonium players who double on trombone may be used in a jazz or popular music ensemble to supplement the horn line.

Re: Music [2]
Ah, thank you for the comprehensive answer. I'm a bit embarrased I didn't know more of that, but it's interesting to get the instrument into some context. As conical bore instruments go, I actually played cornetto in a marching band through primary school.
Best of luck with the trombone. Starting a new instrument always seems a bit daunting to me, but it's also a lot of fun. I've been fiddling around with the violin for a little while without getting all that far, but it's been fun. I guess with the trombone at least you have a good understanding of how composers use it in an orchestra setting, which might help, while the technique obviously is different.

We sort of tried that, the lack of recording possibilities shot us (at least me) down...

Norc should play this.
Heard it on the radio during my drive home today, really fit the autumnal mood.

Ah, that's pretty pretty. Though I'm certainly not up to playing it.

That's pretty cool.
I tried playing cornetto again not too long ago.. it didn't go all that well. Well, I did manage to get some sound from it.. eventually.

Ah, ok. Well, that's different of course. But I guess it puts you in the whole mastering an istrument situation, which can have some issues of it's own.

This is a bit long and starts a bit slowly, but it's pretty cool so I'd stick with it.
