Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?

Yes. If you come across an Eldo on a Tolkien forum it's probably me, although at this point the only other forums I'm active-ish at (under this name) are TORn and the LOTR Plaza.  I used to both at both of them frequently before migrating over here.

Just me or does that picture in the box edition of Bilbo with Gollum looming above him look, well a bit crap?

I think its a picture of the figure. Although might just be the angle but the box image looks like the poses are very sightly different from the statue.
Doesnt look much like Martin though either way.

Yeah, it looks pretty bad. I've never bought a DVD that came with figurines and stuff, though at least the deluxe LOTR EEs had cool models of the Argonath and Minas Tirith and stuff instead of action figures.

The AUJ-EE will be available to download on iTunes on October 22 (and through other services November 4), so I think I'm gonna watch or rent it that way before making the decision about whether or not to buy it. Though there's a good chance I'll buy the Blu-ray no matter what just for the Appendices.

Doubtful, but I don't know for sure.  Usually buying a digital copy of a movie just gives you the film without any bells or whistles.  But it's also cheaper than buying the full Blu-ray or DVD release.

Without the bells and whistles I think we've already established you've got crap for this particular movie. Can't see spending any money for that.

Not sure you can put enough bells and whistles on this particular steaming pile of crap that would disguise in any way that its still a steaming pile of crap underneath. Maybe if they put the bells and whistles on a naked dancing Karen Gillan I wouldnt notice how bad the film is, maybe.

I'd like to see it again before DOS comes out to refresh my memory and to see if my opinion of it has changed for better or for worse. Besides, the Amazon rental fee for movies is usually just a couple of bucks -- probably less than a movie ticket -- so it's not like it's a big expense.

Someone saw the EE on an Air New Zealand flight where they're apparently being screened, and wrote up a summary of all the new scenes.  Though it doesn't include the really good Bilbo and Elrond scene that was officially released over the summer.

Yes, the Bilbo/Elrond scene was officially stated to be in the EE.  Maybe this person just forgot that it wasn't in the original?  Or maybe they're full of crap.  Who knows.

I don't think anyone on this forum has seen it yet (or at least no one has talked about their experience publicly), but the EE is available streaming on iTunes and Amazon Instant, and will be out on physical media in a little over a week.

We've been posting and reacting to a bunch of individual EE scenes over in the Hobbit pictures thread, though.
