Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
I liked the lotr trilogy as really great films with very good visuals. It looked like Middle Earth; AUJ looks like New Zealand. The score was stirring then, now it's tired. This contrast sums up the whole movie.Mrs Figg wrote:I do feel in the minority loving LOTR. I think it was extremely high quality film making, even after 10 years. I doubt I will ever see anything quite so beautiful again, not the way things are going.

Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
Reading through everyone's thoughts here, it feels like AUJ is already being seen as this franchise's "Phantom Menace moment". A lot of the criticisms are similar. I remember an early review using that comparison and getting some flak for it, but I'm not surprised that the film is being judged more harshly now that the hype glow has faded.
Remember how before AUJ hit theatres people were saying stuff like "Watch out George Lucas, Peter Jackson is about to show you how to make a good prequel"?

Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
I recall Ally saying that it wasn't as good as she expected/wanted, though. I thought that was one of the harshest criticisms the movie could have received.
Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
I was bursting with excitement at the thought of The Hobbit being filmed by PJ, I was expecting it to blow my socks off, dunno, something awesome, something way past Avatar in terms of advances in visuals and tech, a new bar getting shot out the water and fried with a nice garnish of basil, something AWESOME.
it wasnt.

Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
I got not only pretty much exactly what I expected, I got quite a lot of what I had predicted on this very forum before a shot was even filmed. Sadly.

Mrs Figg wrote:The only bits that actually annoy me in the whole films is Faramir being a pillock and taking Frodo to Osgiliath
I had exactly the same experience.. (I kind of wanted to see an old forest in the extended edition given the lightning fast Bree arrival, but this didn't detract from my enjoyment of the film like the Faramir diversion. It was cool to see the 'dig deep' addition in the TTT:EE, but it is evident nothing they did made up for Frodo being carted all the way to within sight of Minas Tirith. Not only did it detract from Faramir's character, but it made the initial party break up feel less significant, and meaningful).
That is some news about the AUJ:EE - did you read the part about PJ cutting out the Azog narrative distractor cut scenes after watching the film for himself?

I am hoping (in vain) that the additional shots of the NZ terrain will help soften the Azog cuts.
Fading off into some distant irrelevant world there was this obsessed orc named Azog who has been tracking his arch nemesis Thorin in the hinterland of the misty mountains for 42 years (despite there being considerable word that Thorin is in fact more generally located in the Blue Mountains).

I am hoping there is just enough left of the book in there somewhere among the bird poo that I can put together a purist edit of it- I think thats about the best I can hope for from this one......and thats a pretty slim hope.

Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
I have faith in you Petty.
I think MF does an admirable Bilbo, so if you can just string all those scenes together coherently I think it will be well worth watching.
And the script for all three was done at the same time, so I expect there will be other scenes like those in AUJ that followed the text fairly closely. ( I do have hopes for Inside Information....)

Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
That's an interesting point about the scripts, Dave. I wonder how much of the latter two films will be from the original film two script (perhaps it was just too long) or if the new scenes were only written after the decision to make the project a trilogy. Regardless, there should still be plenty of scenes from the two-film phase of the project left.

Re: Will the extended edition make AUJ flow better?
Hopefully the EE will contain more moments from the book and less made up crap of Jackson's. I'm not very hopeful though since everyone knows Jackson likes to put his own made up content before anything Tolkien wrote.
