Re: Amusing poems
Eldorion wrote:That's a rather profound take on the technology's disruptive effects on interpersonal relationships (for an eleven year old).
The poem defies age. It's very good no matter how old the writer is, Eldo.
Now, Eldo, read it while pretending I wrote it.
Before
Before it was different
from now
They had to walk to each other
Before
But now they call
on the telephone
- Boy, 11 years old
Yep... still a very very good poem I'd be proud of at 54, going on 55. (NB I see "- Boy, 11 years old" as being important to the poem, but not as the poet himself).

Sometimes, Norc, Fate itself (and integrity) forces me to agree with the viewpoint of a younger person, but it's not like I want to make a habit of it.

Re: Amusing poems
Oh yeah btw... A good poem sometimes will inspire new perspectives - or shifting perspectives - when you re-read it.... Indeed, makes you consider alternative meanings without being ever ambiguous. I mean, yes it could mean the coolness and losses of technology (but not in this case it's positives - as in Yin and Yang!), but it also could mean (for example) that they no longer walk to each other because the streets are now dangerous to walk alone for children (or anyone), and contact must be made by voice only. See, I bring my own experience, a sense of fear and danger, to the poem. Oh yes, the poem no longer belongs to Ringo, because good poems belong to no one. I mislike poems that tell you what to think, you see. No, I like poems that cause you to think, unencumbered by critiques of what the writer intended, or even who he/she was.

Re: Amusing poems
it doesn't just talk about the transition of techonology, but also the melancholy, the isolation modern society faces when u don't have to talk to each other.
Re: Amusing poems
Good point - but stop saying things I agree with, Norc! Don't forget that there's a Generation Gap involved here!

Actually, didn't read this right first time. Should that be...

I mean, the talking bit is still involved, isn't it? Although, talking on the phone is quite different than talking in person... Bloody Ringo - I had no intention of getting this involved over things....

VERY CLOSE VEINS
In a nasty land
with nasty weather
Folk stand in the rain,
They're all cold
and they're all wet.
And they all have
very close veins.

and they're all wet.
And they all have
very close veins.

Excellent, I feel like I'm getting through to you now. One must always remain aware (and mindful of) the Great Generational Divide -- it's only respectable.
