Well PJ does raise and important but dangerous point. We thought the attempts to tie The Hobbit closer to LOTR were bad, but imagine how many awful connections will be invented by whoever ends up making First Age movies in the distant future (probably after it enters the public domain). Twenty bucks says Hobbits will be shoehorned in somehow. The Silmarillion doesn't even have the advantage of being famous in its own right like The Hobbit does.

Re: Filming Possibilities
I would love love love (as I've mentioned a few times before) to make Beren and Luthien into something someday. I don't even care if I loose money from it. So secretly, I'm hoping the rights do get freed one day. A Beren and Luthein story could maybe be salvaged from FOTR and combined with Aragorn and Arwen's meeting in Appendix A. The best part of that story though is what's not in the song Aragorn sings (of course) so I feel like that wouldn't be doing it justice.

By the time Sil enters public domain, they'll probably be so many LOTR parodies/spin offs/remakes people may hav just stopped caring.
Marvel has barely finished Phase 1 of its 'Cinematic Universe' and I'm already getting bored (granted, this is more of a North American phenomena than a European one), despite the huge fanbase for LOTR, I'm not entirely convinced it will still pull in the numbers 100 years from now.
At least if Jackson does end up directing a Silmarillion film somehow, he won't be able to use the appendices as an excuse...

Re: Filming Possibilities
First Sin writes a Hobbit script, then Elthir adapts Turin, anyone for a Roverandom film?

Re: Filming Possibilities
I hope that they do stop. Regardless of my feelings about The Hobbit, I'm really unenthused about the emerging trend of "cinematic universes" and movie franchises that never, ever end. There's really something to be said for telling a story that has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
