Favorite Parts: Martin Freeman and Aidan Turner finally speaking and Andy Serkis refering to PJ as "PJ!"
And that warg scene seemed to be happening during the day, but doesn't that happen at night? I mean I'm sure that PJ can do something to make it look darker But I'm glad there's so much being done on location and that the second unit was basically getting aerial shots the entire time, which puts to rest most of my unease over how computer generated the trailer looked!

Ringdrotten wrote:I agree that the dwarves looked silly paddling in the water, but I think I can live with that. Might be an attempt to more visibly portray the humiliation they are experiencing. As always, though, the production videos are awesome I hope we don't have to wait another two months for the next!
actually, I think it was a good step. I mean closed barrels works in the book, but it might get a bit boring in the movies
and Tin, FILTERS!

Re: News from the set [2]
My favorite part was "formal Friday". Totally showing the right spirit, I think. As I am someone who believes formal dress should not be a part of every day life (face it, most of it is ridiculous), it should not be a part of every day workplace life. So formal wear once a week sounds about right to me.

I bet Phillips is relieved he only has to starch your velvet knickerbockers and frock coat once a week.

Re: News from the set [2]
I generally lounge about in my silk bathrobe and slippers. If need be I'll don a vest and jacket for the telecon with investors - that's basically a bust shot.
But after that shock you gave Phillips - you remember, when he read his name whilst looking over my shoulder during the morning pomade application - he hasn't been the same. Developed such a case of the shakes he simply could not hold the martini tray steady. I've had to put him down, poor fellow. Ferguson has replaced him and I've been sorely vexed training him up. The brioche is always toasted a shade too dark, and the rose petals are continuously bunched in the corner of the bath - nobody could strew petals like poor Phillips...how I miss him.

Poor old Phillips, he could iron a Financial Times like no other. I hope Ferguson gives satisfaction, tell him to always wipe outwards not inwards, that once happened to me and I got a nasty case of cystitis.

He's starting to remind me of Biffo... Doesn't he look a bit like Biffo now? Are there more secrets to be found in the Halfwise family tree?

Um, this is Nigel. Surely the haircut has convinced you I couldn't possibly be that Halfwise chappie, who of course I have not the slightest personal connection to. Seems to have biffed off Constable Mirabella in the Monkees thread, and she's out for his hide. No real clue where he is...none at all.
{{{Mrs Figg - when you get a chance could you send a runner with some brie and shortbread to the little furry guy hiding under the Bracegirdle porch in Harbottle? That's a dear. And if you see Mirabella just sort of offhandedly mention you've heard that Halfwise is now a believer.}}}

Re: News from the set [2]
well at least the rapids dont look too rapid. If you were an actor would YOU like to be sealed in a barrel and shoved in some freezing water? whats the point? you may as well shove empty barrels down in the water, and everyone would know they were empty. This way we SEE that they are really in the barrels and in some danger, its much better cinematically, come on you have to admit the logic surely??? go on you know you want to:

Re: News from the set [2]
I expect the rapids to be cgi'ed in later Mrs Figg!!! (Or more likely shot in a water tank where they can control it)
No, no , no Mrs Figg- the barrel scene, the actual floating down the river bit should last about 5 seconds onscreen and it should look like a live version of Tolkiens illustration. It should not be a featue event of the film, the exciting bit is the getting out and the fast channel leading out to the river, after that a couple of drifting montage shots and beach time!
There is no reason to turn it into a dramatic, exiciting sequence involving Dwarves popping out of barrels except PJ cant bloody help himself!!!
Thats storyy and character development PJ is making room for this silliness for (again).

Re: News from the set [2]
This is real, we see its real, cgi or water tanks could be faked, and this is not, obviously. Their reactions are going to be real, its not exactly going to be pleasant for the actors, have you seen how many frogmen are around to make sure they are not drownded? it must be quite scary even though its in a 'controlled' environment, so the look on their faces is going to be to some extent real, not faked later, and I think thats cool, and brave of them
er but it is a dramatic exciting scene in the book, half of them nearly dont survive, there is nowt wrong with making it visually interesting.

And wrong and completely unneccessary and eating into character and story time with a cheap thrill ride down a river. And I still think they will do pick up shots ect in a tank, thats pretty normal for films with water bits in them, easier to get the close up shots you want, you cna reshoot as much as you need to and it lets you safely do any action (and its PJ so there will be action even though there should not be- we all know that).

Re: News from the set [2]
Its part of the story and therefore legitimate, if it had been made up by PJ thats one thing, but its in the book. Its probably only going to be shown for a few minutes and wont be overlong, as the stretch of river they are using seems to be quite short, and people will know if they are using the same stretch of water to make it seem longer. I wouldnt worry about it, whats wrong with showing them in the river anyway? as I said it was a dramatic moment in the book.
"All he knew was that the river seemed to go on and on and on for ever, and he was hungry, and had a nasty cold in the nose, and did not like the way the Mountain seemed to frown at him and threaten him as it drew ever nearer. After a while, however, the river took a more southerly course and the Mountain receded again, and at last, late in the day the shores grew rocky, the river gathered all its wandering waters together into a deep and rapid flood, and they swept along at great speed".
the river seemed to go on and on and on for ever..and they swept along at great speed..
I rest my case.

Re: News from the set [2]
There are a few things wrong here in fact- firstly I only see dwarves in barrels! In the book there is a 'bobbing and bumping mass of casks and tubs' the barrels the dwarves are in are in among loads of empties also being sent downstream- here in PJ's these are all missing, it seems rather luckily for the dwarves the elves only need to send back the exact number of barrels required for them to hide in-now thats fortutious! (what it really tells me is PJ has changed how they escape to something ridiculous over the top invovling that female elf he invented)
Nothing exciting really happens in this bit- the excitmemnt is in getting out, the short bit that describes the journey is all about Bilbo feeling cold and miserable and how hard it is to cling on (and thats not a long bit, a paragraph or so) then they wash up on the shore. The entire reference during that bit to drowing dwarves is one line in which Bilbo thinks some of the barrels look low in the water and he hopes they havent leaked.

Your original objection was to the rapids, and I have shown in my post above that the rapids were in the book, now you are going on about how many barrels there are, which in my opinion matters very little how many exactly there are, it doesnt alter the story one bit.

Re: News from the set [2]
A deep and rapid flood is not the same thing as rapids Mrs Figg. Rapids are white water breaking on rocks, a deep and rapid flood is just a swollen river. (And I did not see that bit about the rapid when I made my last response which is why iI never repsonded to it-did you add it in an edit? )
And the number of barrels is significant- in the book they escape because the elves send all ther empties back-that does not seem to be the case here - they have just the right amount of barrels here- not an empty in sight- so clearly they are not just drifiting along with the all the other empties. We also know this female elf will play some part in events so it seems unlikely to me we will get the book version of the escape. Extrapolation yes, but informed extrapolation.
And not everything is just about the story staying vaguely similar- this is Tolkien whose world works, with reasons for things happening, something PJ has never bothered with.

Re: News from the set [2]
There's only the exact number of barrels because they can't all jolly well go cramming anything extra under the new female elf's hoopskirts during the escape, can they? I mean, that would be ridiculous.
I simply cannot beLIEVE the way we have to explain everything to you, Petty!
And PJ is doing middle earth a favor by introducing a new female elf. By my count that brings the entire female elf population throughout the history of middle earth up to...(scribble scribble scribble)...eight. If I was an elf of either sex I'd be jolly happy about the situation (frustrated males, bone tired females).

Re: News from the set [2]
I like the open barrel solution. It works better on film. Because you know they're inside and so on. Not so fun I think to see 13 barrels floating down the river on screen. It works in the book, but not on screen in my opinion.
