Re: US Presidential Election 2012
I was pretty offended by that video as well but from further reading it appears that the chanting was actually caused by Ron Paul supporters who had an issue with RNC leadership rather than anti-Hispanic sentiment. That doesn't change how it comes off, though, and it's still ridiculous. You can tell from the look on the RNC chairman's face that he's wondering how he's expected to win an election with people like that.

Re: US Presidential Election 2012
It certainly doesnt look good on the video- particularly as the Chairman seems to be give the impression he thinks because of race, as he twice pointedly mentions she is puerto recan and it sounds like the crowd respond again when he says it.
But there may well be more to it than it seems as you say.
As to the peanuts thing. If you tap into certain stereotypes, as the Republicans do, and appeal to a certain mindset and appeal to their prejudices just to secure their vote this is to be expected. Its no more suprisingly sadly than the woman at McCains rally who insited Obama was an a arab.

Buckie would have helped sort it.
You get drunk, agree with everyone, get more drunk, disagree, get in a big rammy (mass fight) wake up in a cell or in hospital.
Next time you get together you get drunk, agree, sort it all out so you can go and have a swally (mass drink) together. Much better.

Re: US Presidential Election 2012
You know the Republican Party has sunk to a new low when Fox News accuses their VP candidate of setting the world record for lying in a political speech.

The money shot, followed by a detailed breakdown at the link:
On the other hand, to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryan’s speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech. On this measure, while it was Romney who ran the Olympics, Ryan earned the gold.

The presidential debates will be predictable, it's the vice presidential debates that will see me setting up the ice chest next to the recliner.

Re: US Presidential Election 2012
She describes herself as a "progressive voice on Fox" on her Twitter page so perhaps this is not out of character for her. A quick scan of her recent articles shows a distinctly un-Fox style.

Paul Ryan's speech in 3 words
Published August 30, 2012
Paul Ryan's speech was three things: dazzling, deceiving and distracting.
Republicans should be careful what they wish for with Paul Ryan on the ticket
Published August 14, 2012
While the conservative base may be thrilled with Mitt Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his running mate and at the prospect of gutting government to fund more tax breaks for billionaires and oil companies, ordinary Americans are not.
Obama's right, Americans can't succeed without government
Published July 17, 2012
President Obama's comments about business have been taken out of context. The president was clear: We succeed because of our individual initiative but also because of the public investments that help springboard that success.
Chief Justice Roberts does the right thing on ObamaCare
Published June 28, 2012
The Supreme Court has upheld ObamaCare. America, sometimes justice manages to be blind to politics and sometimes, just sometimes, even conservatives on the Court realize that we have a federal government for good reason.
It's time we start sharing the American Dream
Published June 18, 2012
I am proud of America. President Obama did the right thing providing a path to citizenship for America’s undocumented immigrants.
Re: US Presidential Election 2012
I agree about the debates. I've been looking forward to the Biden/Ryan debate as well but now I can't wait.
I hope Romney will say or do something outrageous but he seems too robotic for that to happen.

Does Ryan think Romney is a Christian?

That's an interesting question that we will probably never know the answer to.
...Unless Ryan made an unguarded comment about Mormons in the past.
Edit: durr, I can type the words I mean to.

Are Mormons Christians? Surely someone can answer that question!

Re: US Presidential Election 2012
I think most Christians recognize The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Christian, but many have strong doctrinal differences. The word "cult" gets trotted out from time to time, but much less than it used to.

So long as all Christians (and Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists) get to Heaven, then I guess they all can sleep at night.

Re: US Presidential Election 2012
Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Unitarians are all in a strange sort of grey area. Many evangelical Christians don't acknowledge them as true Christians, but to be fair, plenty of evangelicals don't consider Catholics to be Christian either. I think Dave is right that such attitudes are considerably less common now than they were, say, 30 years ago, though.

Re: US Presidential Election 2012
I think it is a fearful thing to be swept away by personality. Many evil things are done that way and in the frenzy no one even notices. It reminds me of the horror of one of the trilogy of the 'planet' books by C.S. Lewis. A great personality or two ended up taking over a university town and it led to such terror and unbelievable horror for the citizens. I would rather not even think about a party but the candidate. Here in British Columbia, when we elect someone we really could care less about the party so much as the candidate. We try to find out all the good bad and ugly and go from there. And if elected they had better do as they said. We voted out our premier in the middle of a term because we felt he was not fulfilling his promises and we voted out the hst. America is such a great great nation. I just want every person of voting age to think seriously like our Eldo and research and do what ever is necessary to keep America free, prosperous and strong.

Re: US Presidential Election 2012
I think they should make the both nominees go to the other party's convention instead of their own. Would make things a lot more interesting.
Re: US Presidential Election 2012
In Washington State we don't vote by parties for State elections. In the primary elections the top two candidates advance to the general election regardless of party. They can both be Democrat, both be Republican, or any independent party. The theory is exactly what you're saying, Leelee.
The choice is supposed between the best two people, not a contest between two parties. Then when the officials get into office they don't owe a significant debt to the party for putting them there. Instead their obligation is directly to the people.
I'm afraid our national elections have gotten pretty silly though.....
