Re: Respectability Thread
To be fair to Orwell, I felt the much the same as he did when I was 12 years old and my mom told me to clean my room.

What's your Mother's name so I can put her on a certain list I'm compiling - your name's near the top {{{I won't mention a certain Scotshobbit just now) - for future actioning!

Re: Respectability Thread
Says something about the respectability of this place that this thread numbers a sad two pages.

Re: Respectability Thread
Odo hasn't been so active as late. And of course society has been spinning out of control.

Clearly it's because we're so respectable in all our other threads that this one simply isn't needed. Clearly.

Our mayor is reminiscent of a certain president of the galaxy.

Re: Respectability Thread
I rather liked that movie, btw, despite Alan Rickman incomprehensibly falling flat as Marvin.

Re: Respectability Thread
I liked the movie too, but I think they should have either scrapped Zaphod's second head or just gone with the traditional two heads like in the book. The under-the-chin head just didn't work.

Re: Respectability Thread
Having seen the more traditional two heads tried in the TV show, I think the movie was the better call. It's one of those things that can work in a book, but just can't work visually...not for a primary character.

I dont think you could do it on film unless you make the extra head cgi, and that would be expensive for every shot and very tricky to do.
But the head under the chin thing didnt work for me, it takes away the point of him having two heads and would be better off just left out and not mentioned.
Sadly this means you lose a chunk of Zaphods personality, as the heads talk to each other quite a lot (an effect easily achieved in the original radio plays by just using right and left sound channels for each head).
Less said about Marvin in the film the better though. (what was wrong with getting the original actor in to do it? He is brilliant and knows the part inside out and has played Marvin on and off now for half a century). And whilst I thought the films Ford was good, he is just not as good as the original Ford.
The other big issue with the film is the plot. As Hitchhikers was written in a bit of a wing and a prayer and very much made up as it went along, and then was further straightened out and tightened in the book editions, it is not very suitable for adaptation.
Oddly enough from the third book onwards (Tertiary phase on the radio version) through the entire Krikket war stuff is a perfectly suitable story to adapt.
