A lot of people may find opera to be inaccessible. Maybe they don't like the music, can't understand the language, or just don't want to sit and listen to something that averages around 2.5 to 3 hours in length. But I think if people would take the time, be patient, and open up their minds, they can find stories that are just as, if not, more compelling than today's average movie.
I think Wagner's ring cycle should get the full movie treatment. I'll admit to finding opera daunting - both the investment of time and fighting through language - plus too many boring but necessary recitatives. But I think Wagner in full movie format (and helpful subtitles of course) could do the trick. Hasn't the movie treatment - as opposed to filmed on stage treatment - been done before? I feel it must have. Opera doesn't really work from sitting in the nosebleed section where I'd normally end up. Needs to be in your face.

I couldn't find any mention on the Wikipedia page at least.

Re: Music [3]
Off the top of my head I know Die Zauberflöte got the movie treatment twice. First by Ingmar Bergman and second by Kenneth Branagh. The Bergman film is more like a filmed performance in most respects. The Branagh film is more interesting, setting the story in a "World War 1" environment, with english instead of german. And of course, any Branagh film is going to have great use of color, the Bergman film is predictably more drab from my memory.

Re: Music [3]
Somehow when I think of operas ripe for movie adaption, The Magic Flute does not spring to mind.
And when I think of The Magic Flute, WW1 definitely does NOT spring to mind.
What the hell, Kenneth?

Re: Music [3]
You hadn't heard of the Donovan song before? It's one of my favorites by him, though it still has a bit of a creepy undertone since I associate it with David Fincher's Zodiac.
I've never seen Britannia but it looks like a trip!

{{Superb and fascinating documentary dissecting the music of the Beatles and how it all relates to the history of western music }}

I enjoyed that. Very strong thesis.
A couple over simplified statements about western/non-western music at the beginning, but he corrected it later.

Re: Music [3]
Went to see Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly yesterday - haven't had that much fun in years. Crazy women, crazier moshpits, an excess of beer and two incredible live bands. Bruised and battered and very satisfied altogether

Nice! They toured through Santa Cruz a while back too, as I recall. I didn't see them though, not my "scene".

Re: Music [3]
I don't think you need to be a fan to enjoy a concert like that, it's more an experience than anything else. I do like their music alot, though Had a blast, but my face still hurts from an elbow that came out of nowhere in the middle of the mosh

Who's singing that? Doesn't sound like Jagger.

Re: Music [3]
Yeah, it's Jagger. Listen to Exile on Main Street and you get a wider sampling of his vocal styles (and the bands versatility) beyond rock and roll.
