Re: The big photos of beautiful things
Indeed, that's beautiful!
Those look like long-exposure (at least 10-second long exposures anyway) photographs to me. Am I mistaken? I've never actually seen the Northern Lights so I don't know how much the light tends to move about; how quickly it undulates that is.
I can't imagine staying out in the cold too long though for those shots, so I assume they move pretty quickly!

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

These are photos with fairly long exposure time, about 10-15s, with low iso. I have one with higher iso and only 2-3s exposure time.
This last one is taken over 6s w/iso 3200
Yesterday wasn't a good day for "the lights", so I will try and get some more photos over the holidays

We have nothing near as stunning down here, but i was at our cabin getting a Christmas tree over the weekend, and the mood turned pretty special earlier today.

Re: The big photos of beautiful things
I think it was receding, and the lake was reflecting it so you didn't know where the fog ended and the lake started creating quite an atmosphere. I don't know how well the pictures capture it though.
It's quite a nice lake.

Its pretty much what it sounds like- you bleach the picture, burns out the whites more, makes it a bit glowy round the edges.
Bloom lighting does something not dissimilar in end effect but only really effects highlights- the brightest points in all the colours- unless it has a submenu of course where you can individually alter high mid and low ends of the spectrum too. Its also softer round the edges than the bleach one.
