I was thinking, what are some of people here's favorite places to read Tolkien (or any good book really), or places they have been and photographed that reminds them of Tolkien. I remember growing up as a kid reading the Hobbit and LOTR taking a book and hiking out through the many acres of land my family owns to sit by a stream, or on a hillside and just let my imagination run wild.

Lovely pictures, Sin. Nod I'm afraid I've always done most of my reading indoors, though when I was younger I would frequently take books in the car and read for as long as I could.  I'd often bring Tolkien books for this, even on very short trips, and it wasn't uncommon for me not to want to get out of the car when we got to wherever we were going. Rolling Eyes

That said, I don't read as much anymore, but I do quite a bit when we go camping (which is several times a year), and the natural environment can definitely add to the experience.  I re-read the Children of Hurin chapter from Unfinished Tales on our October trip, and I read Dune for the first time back in August when we were camping at the beach (having actual dunes around was a lot of fun for that Very Happy).

I read in bed these days too. When I was a kid I used to sit in the garden, tucked away in a corner & pretend I was in where ever that book was set Very Happy Christmas type stories,ALWAYS in bed, where it was warm & toasty plus we had a coal fire in every room, ( being victorian ) which added to the atmosphere Very Happy And the last, most fav place for me was on my window ledge, under full moonlight, getting all that magical Faerie feeling Very Happy

Bed reading for me as well. When a kid I used to lounge around on the sofa and read, but now with enough other things to do it's relegated to taking my mind off reality long enough to coax me closer to the dream state.

As a kid I read everywhere. Before school I used to sit reading and eating my breakfast in the kitchen right up as close as I could get to our old calor gas heater (no central heating back then!), I read on the bus, I read staning in queues, and I read in bed at night.

Sin lovely pictures- where abouts is that? if I dont know better those river pictures could be the wet coast of Scotland!

I read a lot of the Lord of the Rings while I was sick with a cold. I would lie on the floor in the bathroom for some reason. At least that's where I remember reading the end of the Two Towers. Maybe because the door locked it was somewhere I'd be safe from my mom badgering me about or my sister annoying me?

Otherwise in bed was always good, or outside in the woods. I liked going outside because, again, I could get away from my mom wanting me to do things. And when all you want to do is read books, a natural sort of confrontation arose there for me growing up. Wink

Sin's on the East Coast, which has very similar vegetation to Britain. We've got woods and streams like that in Maryland too, though unfortunately my backyard is a lot more built up.

I can only read in bed, outside theres too many distractions, a leaf falls to the ground and I am off on a musing about Elves and immortality, which lasts 10 minutes in which time I have lost the moment in the book, so no outside reading for me.

Those are all from Upstate New York about 2 hours from the Canadian border. Little town called Bath, NY. Born and raised there, spent a lot of my time taking a book and hiking out into the woods to find a nice spot to read. There were literally hundreds of places that reminded me of the landscapes in my head while reading Tolkien. The scene where Frodo and the other hobbits crouch under the roots of the tree off the side of the road, I had a spot just like that, which sadly the tree died and fell over filling in the cubby underneath the roots. But many a time my parents would be looking for me and walk right past while I was reading in there.

Scotland is on my Bucket list Petty. Wife and I have already said we will make it there someday after the kids are out of the house. I'll be that "American" with florescent white legs poking out from under a Kilt slap laugh

Yeah I'm pretty sure the "Scottish" have those same fluorescent white legs peeking underneath their kilts, at least the ones that aren't too hairy to show any skin at all!

My legs rarely ever and I do mean NEVER see the sunlight. well there is the odd chance I might wear a pair of shorts or a Kilt but those occasions are super rare.not enough to put ANY color in my legs...

Really nice pictures Sin, kinda reminds me of parts of The New Forest , although there is some rather nice woodland, and nature walks within reasonable distance of where I live (the south coast of England, Hampshire to be precise) I have never really taken much advantage of it.

I'd always thought you were from the South (Location 'Deep in the South USA'??) scratch best of luck with your surgery though

Although I've generally pictured The Shire as more pastoral (and 'ordered') around Hobbiton (this may be down to me watching the films first, where the Shire mainly comes across as a bunch of hills and fields with houses in them), that is surprisingly close to how I picture the woods 'along the road' and the Woody End as the Hobbits walk east, there's definitely a kinda of quaint magic about the early journey in the shire Nod , and Tolkien's vivid descriptions are certainly part of that, though I don't find it hard to believe such lovely local locations can also leave a vivid mark on the way you picture or enjoy the story. Personally I find it distracting to read outside, I generally just read at home in the evenings, or when trying to avoid talking to the people you tend to find on British public transport...

That is where I live now, but I grew up in upstate NY. .. I love the south I can ride my Harley  year round if I want, we'll before my accident last year I could.  And I'm an hour and a half from the ocean, and 45 minutes to an hour from the mountains in North Carolina although I prefer the 3 hour ride to the mountains of Tennessee.i do miss the scenery of NY, BUT the cost of living and location, not to mention work options. Living there I was paying incredibly high taxes, while making much lower pay. That and to get to Walmart is a 35 to 40 minute drive. I always look forward to my yearly visit though

How far upstate were you, Sin? I have an aunt and uncle near Plattsburgh, which is great to visit in both winter and summer. Very Happy Plus it's day trip distance from Montreal. Thumbs Up

I have heard that the cost of living is much better once you leave the Northeast though. Laughing
