Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I didnt like Ridley's take on Robin Hood didnt like Russell Crowe as Robin for a start. Prometheus is sorta 50/50 with me

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I couldn't even finish Robin Hood when I saw it on some cable channel. Just too lolworthily bad. Prometheus had a few redeeming qualities (set design, Michael Fassbender) but overall it was a mess of a movie that only declined further in my estimation the more time I thought about it (and I wasn't all that positive about it to begin with).
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Robin Hood to me was SHAT, Prometheus I can take it or leave it, ( preferably leave it ) And when you think about the decent films he's made... Legend..Thelma & Louise...Gladiator wasnt that bad & it suited Crowe better I feel.

Watched Monster Squad after work. Lots of fun, especially if you're a fan of the classic Universal horror monsters and 80s movie tropes. It's on Netflix.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I kind of liked Prometheus because of Michael Fassbender's and Noomi Rapace's (sp?) character.
And my mom liked Robin Hood and I've seen it a couple times now. I can't say it's good, but it has several actors who I enjoyed watching and the story was at least original in a few interesting respects.
The Martian has stellar reviews, so I highly suggest you go see it Huffjuff.
I had thought how odd it was that Kristen Wiig was in the film, but now I read that the film is actually surprisingly funny: a fact that I'm sure is due in at least a few scenes to her presence as she is an excellent comic actor.
I imagine that Matt Damon felt that he needed to redeem his [Spoiler!] piss-poor astronaut character in Interstellar and so pulled some strings to be cast in the lead.

I thought Damon was good in Interstellar. I dunno how they kept his appearance there secret but it added to the impact of those scenes I think. The character was a douche of course but Damon impressed as usual.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Yeah I liked Interstellar as well! It really amazes me that they actually brought mathematicians and physicists to make an approx virtual estimate of a black hole (and all the other physics in the movie!

On Prometheus I am waiting to see what comes next- I found it, as it stands, not awful or even bad but definitely very patchy indeed.
The Martian- I put up the audio book of it somewhere on here ages a ago before I even knew about the film- it reminded me of scifi of about the Asimov period- where the solidity of the science underpinning the scifi was as important as the narrative (the narrative bit I didn't think was really anything new or groundbreaking but it serves its purpose well enough) the nub of it is in the trying to survive and the science that underpins the efforts, when it goes right and wrong.

Even tho I thought Prometheus was a bit.....shilly shally....Im looking forward to the next instalment, going by IMDB will be 2017 ? Rapace & Fassbender are apparently still in it, which will be nice as I like continuity

I suppose "piss-poor" was really not the right word to use. I meant that his character is a total dick and not at all the hero that he appears to be in The Martian.Eldorion wrote:I thought Damon was good in Interstellar. Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Got to see "Terminator Genisys" & I liked it I think I expected cheesy, miss matched hok'um but, it flowed in an easy understandable pace. I didnt feel " WTF ? eh ?" & even tho the only original member of the films was Arnie snr & his CGI pal (jnr) that didnt faze me. I quickly accepted the "new" actors &
- Spoiler:
- even the Terminator I was rooting for. I am assuming the last half of the film was the Real in the flesh Arnie ? anyway, he was leaner, grey haired but, I liked him for it. Included in the line up was "liquid terminator" still chasing. It wasnt so full on dynamic fighting as previous films but what there was was good enough, It may not have been the "all bells & whistles Climax" but it was watchable. There were a few amusing lines spoken, one of which was said by Arnie in response to a comment "Sarah" said,
"you worked in construction ??
Arnie...."until I was laid off "
And he sounded so disappointed Thank gawd it wasnt to complicated for my little brain to work out & it was a good film, For any Terminator fans out there I hope you wont feel too let down, its worth a look !

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I'm glad you liked it Azriel, but your experience with understanding the plot fairly easily is quite the opposite of what whats-his-face said on here a while back about it, and what I've read in reviews. I'm still quite wary of the movie's supposed overly-convoluted plot lines, especially those that arise in the last third of the film.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Well, that was a tad sobering. watched "Mr Holmes" with Sir Ian McKellen playing Sherlock himself.....
- Spoiler:
- It wasnt quite how I expected it. The film showed us Sherlock as a weakened & frail old man of 93. He is suffering from very bad memory & he has little flash backs to one particular memory that has haunted him. He now takes joy in caring for his bees & the son of the housekeeper he employs gives him a little zest for life. I was hoping to see Sherlock on his last case & the few glimpses we get is of Sherlock just before he retires. He looked very dapper in his dark suit & top hat. The film was as toned down, quiet & thoughtful as the last few years Sherlock has, tho, thank gawd, you dont see him peg out but its made clear senility is taking its toll & that he is human like the rest of us after all. I also vainly wanted to see the locations in the film as they were shot around my neck of the woods, ( Winchelsea & Seaford ) the music throughout the film was melancholy & at the end I felt numb. Numb with " so this is life " with not a lot to show for your time here. Interesting idea about Sherlock but as it did nothing to lift my mood I dont think IL watch it again.Sir Ian did a fine job of playing Sherlock & I did believe in him because of Ian's way of portraying him.You dont see Watson, tho you are given a very brief explanation, & at the end of the film Sherlock lays a stone on the hill top, one for each departed person & thats how we leave it, credits roll.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
My girlfriend has taken it upon herself to expand my cinematic horizons with new stuff, much of which I've heard of but not seen, and some of which is entirely new to me. Largely horror, which she's really into but I'm still not a fan of. About a week ago though we saw The Shawshank Redemption, which was just as good as everyone always said. I knew most of what happened in the movie already just from cultural osmosis, but goddamn, it was really powerful and incredibly well done.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
That reminds me about The Wicker Man. I had found a version online a couple years ago but it was in crappy quality so I didn't want to see it that way. I'll have to try again. I'm generally speaking not that into scary movies -- just don't usually enjoy the experience -- but I'm trying to expand my horizons.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Thing about the Wickerman Eldo is some of it only exists as crappy footage- the opening ten minutes will look like bad TV- where the film still exists (most of the film) its full remastered HD from the original film where its the bad copy they had to work with, its not.
All you need to make sure is that you get the Directors Cut- the theatrical was butchered.
As to scary- most of the films on that list I would put more in the psychological horror bracket than the try to scare you bracket- more unsettling, unnerving, but in ways that make you think or because they did something ground-breaking, in either narrative, direction or concept or all three.
Though not all of them- I did put Braindead on there after all!
