well Guardians was utterly tedious non stop shouting. mind you Karen Gillan found her niche, blank faced robot. bit like in Dr Who.

um I switched off at the bit where Darthboring dunked tattoo hulk guy into some yellow gloop. everyone shouted their dialogue apart from Gillan who just stared meaningfully at space.

Fair enough.
I didn't love Guardians as much as some people did but the soundtrack and humor were enough to keep me interested despite the meh fight choreography and minimal plot. I can understand why that's not enough for everyone, though.

I loved Pacific Rim, but even I can't defend it against charges of the story being crap. And I'm not sure if it'd have the same effect for me on the small screen.

Hee hee, I loved it when they got in those suits & clunked around

Guardians was fantastic, granted I haven't seen it since the theater, but I don't think my opinion would change.
Pacific Rim is a lot of fun.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I just watched Guardians with a crew of tall ship sailors and alcohol in the lounge of a friendly nearby B&B.
We had to keep turning the volume down for the CGI mayhem scenes and back up for the dialog because the paying guests were complaining.
IMHO it's the perfect way to see this movie

I was expecting to really like Guardians as it got some good reviews and people seemed enthusiastic, maybe I needed alcohol.

Just saw Pacific Rim - plot is somewhat boilerplate but it was fun. Wish I had seen it on the big screen, for the visuals were amazing and cried out to be immersive.
Guardians of the Galaxy was fun, perhaps a bit over-rated but far better than it should have been. Slight bits of alcohol may have helped.

Interesting - just looked at slides from Guardians and don't remember the characters of Karen Gillan or Lee Pace at all. Like...nada. Even looking at pictures.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I just saw Testament of Youth (based off of Vera Brittain's memoir) and I thought it really captured the horror (for lack of a better word) that WWI wrought upon families and friends. I won't give anything away, but it didn't jump away from deaths, you had to sit and go through it with Vera which I thought was refreshing and thoughtful.
Also it helps when my favorite boys are in it (Kit Harrington aka Jon Snow, Colin Morgan aka Merlin, and Taron Egerton aka Eggsy from Kingsman) though it also makes it sadder...

"I'm old, not obsolete.'
As I am sure you all know, Arnie loves his little movie quotes and that was one of the regulars in the new Terminator movie, Terminator Genisys.
I am going to put the rest of this in spoilers in case someone wants to watch it, however one warning.... if you do then DO NOT.... I repeat DO NOT watch the trailer beforehand. It WILL ruin the movie for you.

I am going to put the rest of this in spoilers in case someone wants to watch it, however one warning.... if you do then DO NOT.... I repeat DO NOT watch the trailer beforehand. It WILL ruin the movie for you.
- Spoiler:
While this is the fifth movie in the franchise, it pretty much ignores Rise of the Machines and Salvation. And while I think both were ok films, I can understand why they went that way.
So, basic plot.
This film starts showing the story that Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) told Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) in the original movie. The resistance launches it's final attack on Skynet, destroying it's core and winning the war. At the same time, they break in to a facility that houses a time machine. In it's last desperation, Skynet sends a Terminator back through time to kill Sarah Connor and therefore lead to the events in the first film.
Now, if you haven't seen the first 2 films, then most of the next set of sequences will be lost on you and you will also probably be wondering what the hell is going on throughout most of the film.
Kyle Reese is sent back through time to 1985 to defend Sarah Connor (now Emilia Clarke) from the machine, however the original machine has already been taken out by another Terminator that had been sent back to stop a different attempt on Sarah's life in 1973. As we are now on the 4th iteration of an ever changing timeline, Skynet has learnt from films 1 and 2 and tried something new.... and failed again.
So Kyle Reese (now Jai Courtney as Michael Biehn would have been a little too old) is now in an unfamiliar timeline where everything he was taught to do has now changed.
The overarching story here is that as different timelines are formed, so Judgement Day (the machines initial nuclear strike against humanity) itself is put in jeopardy. This means that not only are they trying to stop the future leader of the resistance that defeats them, but they are also trying to ensure that the war itself starts.
Lots of time travel and therefore complicated thought processes if you decide to try and really work out what is going on. If not, then plenty of explosions, one liners and general action movie content.
So, my thoughts on the movie.
Storyline
My opinion is that the majority of this story is actually very well thought out. It takes everything you thought you knew about the lore and twists it around in to something relatively new. Obviously this is based off of a concept used several times, however it doesn't feel stagnant to me like Terminator 3 did at times.
I don't know how well this would come across to anyone that hasn't involved themselves in the franchise before... it was difficult to connect strands together even for someone who knows the films very well. I would recommend watching at least 1 and 2 before you go.
Characters
Arnie actually does well breathing new life in to his character. And there is a very reasonable explanation as to why he appears old. Even at his age, he can still kick ass!!
Emilia on the other hand, I felt struggled with the role she was given. For anyone who has seen the first two would have seen how Linda Hamilton played both the young, naive Sarah in 1985 and completely transformed in to the kick ass Sarah from the second film. In this film, the young, naive version never existed. She is supposed to come across as kick ass from the start but... well she is too cute. She is short, she has soft lookin skin, pouty lips... everything that makes her then inexperienced, young, naive Queen of Dragons from Game of Thrones. She is not a warrior! How they thought her hip firing a shotgun would work is beyond me... she would have broken several things if that was a real one!
John Connor, again didn't quite live up to what I was expecting out of that character. From the very few 'future' shots of him in previous films, he looks tough... almost robotic by the time of the resistance. Here he looked like he should be wearing a shirt and jumper while programming the next version of Windows. In fact, when the biggest twist (that is ruined by the trailer) moves along, he actually fits in to that part of his character well. I wasn't totally sold on this one.
Kyle Reese, the last primary character, was about 50/50. Michael Biehn played a more rough and ready Kyle, worn down by the years of war and suffering. Jai Courtney, by contrast, is very clean cut and energetic. Not the same Kyle Reese. Jai, however, I thought did quite well with what he was given. The confusion of the changed timeline and all that followed was reasonable acting. If there hadn't been an original character then I would have been sold I think.
Effects
There were a lot of visual effects used in the film, and nearly all of them worked. CGI Arnie worked much better than I thought it would. The future war and all it's purple laser glory was good. The T1000 and its liquid metal was good. The only bit I raised an eyebrow too was a helicopter chase near the end which was just a little too much (and ended with a very convenient crash location). So well done to the team that worked on those.
Verdict
Ok.... so by way of comparison, I would give Terminator 1 7/10, T2 9.5/10, T3 5/10 and T4 5/10.
I think, on balance, this probably deserves an 7.5.
It manages on a lot of what made the first 2 successful, but without being tired. It was never going to be revolutionary, because the 5th film in a franchise could probably never be. Good story, great visuals, a lot of respect for it's predecessors (the recreation of scenes from T1 was awesome!!) and a reasonably good set of actors with interpretations of characters mainly judged against their older versions.
If you like Terminator, then go and see this. I am not going to spoil the main twist and I hope you wont watch the trailer and spoil it for yourselves. However, if you are new to it, watch at least 1 (and put up with the production) and 2 (which is epic!!). You will probably be lost otherwise
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Nice review Lancebloke!
I'm not going to see it because it has a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes (4.7/10), but it was nice to read your view of its comparison to the original two.
Speaking of the Rise of the Machines I watched Ex Machina last night. I was not as big a fan of it as so many other people seemed to be when it came out, but it was certainly effective.
The film is shot in Norway (and Pinewood Studios for the interiors) and is really pretty. I liked Oscar Isaac's character the most, because he seemed to be struggling with all this self-doubt and angst about humanity and so on and even though I don't share any of his thoughts the way he was even repeating a sort of mantra to himself in one scene reminded me of my own emotional struggles in a sense.
Domhnall Gleeson is yet again a dewy-eyed twenty-something, a role he seems to be cast in more and more these days. I mean to say that he brings innocence to the role and a certain lack of self-will.
Ava is an excellent creation. I liked her a lot most of the way through the movie. It almost seems redundant or pedantic to point out that the score is great, the editing excellent, the acting very good, the special effects flawless and the cinematography insightful. But there it is anyway.
My main complaint about the film is that

My main complaint about the film is that
- Spoiler:
- by the time the movie ends it lacks a main character. The films begins with Caleb, but (as they have admitted) the director and crew are all in love with Ava and the film clearly shows that. So fairly soon into the movie she becomes the main character. By the end we have Oscar Isaac's character murdered in a sort of Frankensteinian-feminist twist (it felt almost unavoidable to be honest), and Domhnall's character has run into the fact that he is not central to the story but is merely a foil for Ava to use and discard.
With all the twisty reveals and thought-provoking changes-of-viewpoint the film ends up being a little vague about what its point is. I watched a panel of the cast and crew after I finished the film, and they sort of mutually agreed that the point of the movie was to provoke discussion and raise questions, not answer them.
The one place where this really does not work as a film is the fact that once it was revealed how heavily Ava had been manipulating the other characters I no longer felt like I could trust what I had seen of her during the film. And once that happened I no longer felt like I knew her as a character. And if, at the end of the movie, you no longer have a main character you can understand or empathize with, the film lacks narrative resolution. We are left with a dead genius, a discarded mid-level employee, and an AI that we don't actually know very well at all. It was an an unsatisfying ending, to say the least.

Forest - I wondered if the reviews that have been that bad were because they watched the trailer and the whole thing was ruined for them. Otherwise I have no idea how it could have been rated that badly... it is quite a good film.
It is worth it for the recreation of the scenes from T1.. they were great!
I haven't seen the film that you talked about... not sure if I am put off or intrigued.....

Yeah I don't know what went on with the reviewers. It happens that sometimes a film you like gets trashed.
"Critics Consensus: Mired in its muddled mythology, Terminator: Genisys is a lurching retread that lacks the thematic depth, conceptual intelligence, or visual thrills that launched this once-mighty franchise."
For a futuristic movie about artificial intelligence I massively prefer Spike Jonze's Her. So if it comes down to a choice between that and Ex Machina, choose the former.

Saw Ant-Man tonight. It pleasantly surprised me. Lots of funny moments, more comic relief than I expected. I'm more drawn towards the Marvel movies that don't obsess over the Avengers. I really enjoyed Guardians since it was mostly its own self contained story. Ant-Man does mention them and is in that universe, but they didn't dominate the film which was nice.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Watched Zero Dark Thirty (About a CIA agent reaserching and tracking down the location of Bin Laden) the other day, an enjoyable enough way to pass a few hours I suppose, and Jessica Chastain was solid in the lead role, but it was overlong and rather blandly shot (surprising, given Kstheryn Bigelow's work on The Hurt Locker). Things were cast very much in shades of white and Black, there was little to no character development, and a bunch of people sitting around in offices looking at photographs isn't all that exciting to watch be honest, that's not to say I don't mind 'talky' films, but this just felt like a bunch of scenes stuffed together, it didn't flow entirely naturally, I guess I just found it a bit...boring to be honest...
I've read that some took the film's message as promoting the use of Torture in the right circumstances, I'm not going to go into that discussion (though I can understand how they saw things that way), but it did feel kinda jingoistic at points...
5/10 Not a 'bad' film per se, I just don't think it was all that exciting or morally murky for a film about such important events.

just watched 12 years a slave.
holy crapadoodle. that was intense. I hope it was cathartic to someone, you know, really useful, like Shindlers is useful for Jews and The piano is useful for women.

Yes, very intense film!
I don't know what you mean by catharsis though. The film presents the "realities" of slavery in the south (I mean it's a drama not a documentary, but still far more historically sound than other recent films *cough*DjangoUnchained*cough*). Since there has not been slavery in the south for over a hundred years the effect of the film for those descendants of slaves must be more of a realization that this history has happened and an emotional resonance with one's forbears, and not one of "Ah yes I remember when that happened" as, say, occurred with Schindler's List.
I think I do know what you mean by cathartic, upon further thought, but I would not use that particular word.
