No, instead of a fully grown, mature fellow time traveler and part time lord he had to put up with a 20 something immature human Rose bitching at any one that got closer than ten foot from him.

Not so I am equally a huge fan of the Hinchcliffe era, the Adams era (most of it) Lambert of course (Eru bless her!) and quite a few others.
In fact the only era I really dislike is RTD's, Id even take the 6th Doctor era over that again any day.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Not fooking likely !
Watched "Dawn of the Apes" last night
Watched "Dawn of the Apes" last night
- Spoiler:
- Yes, the apes & monkeys looked convincing, the most powerful simian was nearly all but left out & that was the Gorilla, most of the dialogue was UGHS & more UGHS with sign language thrown in thus trying to achieve a higher level of cleverness. Didnt like the script, didnt like the story. It was lame & cliched. It had to rely on action & the proverbial explosions & chimps violently shaking their heads whilst screaming as the writers werent sure what to do or where to take this. I was left feeling 'thats it ?' by the end & ' what was the point in all that ?' Sadly lacking, I was bored most of the time & when I did get up to let the cat out ( & in, & food, & back out again ) I hadnt missed anything when I sat back down.Apart from CGI what did you have ? No story, no guts, lame acting, insipid actors. The one well known face ( Gary Oldman ) didnt have that big a part & was depicted as a bit of a raving looney, a 'lets kill everything in sight' kinda guy. The film focused around family values, albeit the chimps or the humans & it just didnt work for me.

I was about halfway through that spoiler when a strange sense of deja vu came over me Azriel! Strange...
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it though. I really liked parts of the film, and certainly enjoyed it more than the first film in the series. The names are funny when it comes to the Apes movies, this one was called Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It's like they've used up all of the obvious choices and are now extrapolating out all the possible grammatical remixes.

The sad thing is I hadnt even realised we weren't on the Who thread!

I am a fan of good and interesting writing, I was a Moffat fan from a teenager and watching Press Gang (when I wasnt even aware who the writer was, I just knew I loved it).
And if this was the 70's I'd be waxing lyrical over Adams writing for Who I suspect, and Hinchcliffe (well a lot of it anyway).
Ok I promise last Who comment on this thread!

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
you might hate RTD but it is RTD who made WHO the success it is today. You owe him some respect. It was his brilliant casting and writing that gave us a new and revitalised programme. HE built Who into a success and Moffat lives on the reflected glory. RTD is the real deal, he put heart into characters and understood what Who is all about, namely assistants who are normal people put in extraordinary circumstances. that works, not Girls Who Wait, or Impossible Girls. that's why Clara will never be a classic assistant, she isn't normal enough, she doesn't have Donnas heart or Roses spirit, she is just an amalgum of fast quips and shallow gloss, bit like the Ponds and River. So RTD the best thing to happen to Who. EVER.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
My dad wanted to re-watch Taken tonight, and while I had never seen it, I had been intrigued by it ever since I first saw the famous trailer ("I have a very particular set of skills...") several years ago. It lived up to my expectations. Liam Neeson is great, and he killed it in this role (hurr hurr). The movie wouldn't have been nearly as effective with a lesser actor. Not a story to really think about closely but a damn effective thriller. My only real complaint is that there was a little too much shakycam at times. The truck chase at the construction site stood out as pretty unclear with how it was shot. But most of the film was good even on this front.

I thought Taken was terrible, and I say that as a fan of cheesy overblown action films...
(I agree Liam Neeson was great though)

Great in 3D
Great special effects,
but unfortunatly an average film.

I mean if I had thought seriously about Taken I might have been bothered by the glorification of violence, the use of torture, the implicit slut-shaming, what have you. Or even the questionable plotting. But I just wanted to watch Liam Neeson kick ass and I thought the movie delivered on that front. Not a classic but one I could see myself revisiting in a few years to scratch that itch again.
