Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
That's a really interesting story. I guess it raises a couple of legal question. Firstly, the screenwriter claimed it as original. Which it might be, even if it shares outward simmilarities with the book in question. Secondly, if it is actually an adaptation of the book, it's not a question of copyright, as the author says, as she sold the copyright to New Line, but a question of a breach of contract as someone has adapted her work without supplying the agreed upon remuneration. A question of whether Warner, as the owner of New Line, must be seen as the same company in a legal sense. If not, it's a question of breach of New Line's copyright. But what if they choose not to make a case out of that, which they won't, as they're owned by the supposed breacher of their copyright. And what can the author do in that situation? I'm not sure. It's certainly an interesting legal question.

Watched "Gone Girl" with Ben Affleck. It was way better than I thought it would be.
- Spoiler:
- I thought oh here we go, same old thing, wife goes missing, husband gets the blame, things go bad & then it ends happily ever after.......huh...NOT. It was actually quite clever. The wife was seen to have er wots them fings ? oh yes...brains ! It was interesting to see 2 sides of the coin all on the say so of who you think is the injured party. She was devious & Ben is left in a God awful position that none of us would like. Its well worth a look !

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
After the discussion of "To Kill a Mockingbird" on the Books thread, I decided to watch the film again. It seems to hold up better than I'd remembered. It's still a very good movie (despite having no romantic subplot and all the action happening off-screen. Are you listening Warner Bros.??? )
I was stunned to see a very young Robert Duvall as Boo Radley. I'd never known that! It seems it was his first film roll when he was a struggling young stage actor. It's a short part with no lines, but he really nails it!

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I swear if I ever have to watch that movie again...
That video reminded me of the scene where he goes to get Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince the night it's released. If they really wanted to capture the zeitgeist they would have had a group of teens driving around in a car next to the store yelling "Snape kills Dumbledore!" I really wanted that to happen in the movie, at least it would be something! Nothing happens in this movie!
Maybe if they even focused more on his photography as he got older. But all they do with that is have a teacher give him a motivational speech and all of a sudden he's won a scholarship. It's all out of the blue and pointless. I don't care how great people think this movie is, I think it's boring as all hell.

I agree Bungo and that's why I wont be going to watch it. I know I would b bored to tears even though it is a unique film that doesn't make it entertaining. I would have thought filming a kid growing up in war torn Middle East countries would have been fascinating, a real battle for survival, an ordinary kid in an ordinary town is not interesting we already know what that world is like, I spent most of my life trying to escape from it and spending 2 hours in a cinema just aint gonna happen.

Well I finally got round to seeing Guardians of the Galaxy- well just over half of it before I switched it off out of sheer boredom- characters: dull and derivative, story: all over the place and not very important, reasons for caring about anyone in it, at all? Zero.
Looks good though.

Personally I thought Guardains was the best (well, most enjoyable at least) Marvel film I've seen so far (admittedly I've only seen about five wasn't very impressed with The Avengers...), funny, well paced, great cinematography and action sequences, the plot was pretty weak and some of the acting by the Bad Guys left alot to be desired, but it simple silly fun, I don't really know what you expected from a film with a wise cracking racoon and talking tree as main characters
But each to their own.
I could make similar complaints about Doctor Who Series 6

I don't really know what you expected from a film with a wise cracking racoon and talking tree as main characters- Malick
Entertainment- Star Wars had a bin that beeps and an effeminate robot and a huge walking carpet that only talks in growls- but it had characters you could invest in, bad guys you could see the motivations and characters of and a plot that was thought out and not a secondary issue.
I had a sinking feeling right form the start and its 'homage' cheap rip off of Raiders of the Lost Ark opening.
'I could make similar complaints about Doctor Who Series 6'- Malick
You could,. but I wouldn't agree it holds up at all. There is a consistent plot, however convoluted at times, and characters I cared a lot about and who were well developed.

That is a fair point, although I found the characters likeable, it was more down to the humour and the way Pratt played it than the writing (I generally find Marvel films to be a little cheesy and derivative-fun but very predictable) it did seem like Marvel's homage to Star Wars in more ways than one, ironic since Chris Pratt is linked to a new Indiana Jones film...

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I just found the characters flat. They all basically do the same thing- you see them in action- they give some exposition to explain who they are and thats your lot.
I just couldn't bring myself to care about any of them or sympathise with them, or want them to succeed (mainly because the plot was so secondary why should I care about it when the writers didn't).

Fair enough, unlike Star Wars it's film making by committee, Marvel has a formula and it seems to work for its target audience.
I haven't watched it since it came out though, so its possible my viewpoint may change I recently rewatched DOS and it wasn't quite as bad as I'd remembered

I think there is stuff to critique in series 6 but boring I dont think is one of them. It also has some great stand alone episodes in it I'd argue among the best in NuWho- Girl Who Waited, Doctor's Wife, God Complex.

One of my personal favourite episodes of that series- great secondary characters, excellent concept finally making good use of the Nimmos, and excellent character based story stuff going on as well as a commentary on belief and religion. It also superbly shot. I feel its one of the most underrated episodes of NuWho.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Yes she is superb in it, but its a two hander, Matt gets equal credit for the way they play off each other.
In fact its two,tow-handers really as you have Amy and Rory in the TARDIS.
Would be interesting to know how that originally played out- the episode was supposed to be in the second half of series 5 but some of the sets and effects were too expensive and they couldn't get it in the budget, so it was moved to series 6 (it also lost a few scenes as they were too expensive to shoot- I think Gaiman wrote a Hollywood blockbuster rather than a BBC Who budget!).
But this meant Rory was back and Gaiman had to rewrite all the stuff with Amy in the TARDIS to include Rory.
I'd love to know how it played out when it was just HOUSE and Amy (and I still find it hard to believe the voice of House is Michael Sheen- amazing what that man can do with his vocal cords!)

I think the word I'm looking for is 'anyway...'
We saw Ironclad yesterday. The acting was decent, was happy to see Silly-Pirate-With-Glasseye-From-POTC have a serious role and doing it well. Movie was predictable, quite bloody and the remarkable sharp weapons turn blunt at strange moments. We got to roll our eyes and be sarcastic several times so it wasn't a complete waste of time.
