Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I didnt have a problem with hearing the dialogue because it was all dubbed and clear as Crystal. It felt like A Wrinkle in Time, for adults. I love those books. It was a big Love Tesseract.
- Spoiler:
- It was what was being said i didnt understand, ie the science timey wimey stuff. so in the end Earth was doomed? and the remnants were living on the tube orbiting Saturn? I dont know how realistic the science was, and I dont understand what the Eurika! moment was and how it changed things, or what the message was that Cooper gave Murphy via the watch. Was that explained? but I guess it doesnt really matter

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
- Spoiler:
- The Earth was doomed because of some sort of compounding ecological catastrophe that had already resulted in billions of deaths and the breakdown of most organized governments. NASA knew that humans were going to go extinct on Earth in a generation or two, so they had two plans to try to save the species. "Plan A" was to evacuate people from Earth on massive space-ships that would be launched and powered by special gravity engines, but this was considered unlikely because NASA wasn't able to solve some of the theoretical problems concerning gravity manipulation. Michael Caine's character claimed he was trying to solve this problem so that the evacuation could move forward, but he'd actually discovered that the gravity-manipulation stuff was impossible due to inconsistiences between the theory of general relativity and quantum mechanics. The only way to solve the problem would be using data from within a black hole, but there's no way for a probe to send information out of a black hole. Cooper sent himself and TARS into the black hole at the end of the movie to try to get the data and find a way to communicate it back to Earth, which they managed to do thanks to the tesseract thing that the super-advanced future humans placed them in. Cooper used the tesseract's gravity manipulation powers to make the second-hand of the watch wobble like morse code and transmitted the black hole data to Murph. She was then able to use this data to solve the gravity equation that Professor Brand had been unable to. Thus, Plan A was able to go ahead, and Earth was evacuated (at least partially) on the ships that discovered Cooper floating near Saturn.
That's my understanding of the film anyway; I hope the explanation doesn't just make things worse.

I think I prefer A Wrinkle in Time.

The book, not the excretable film version put out by Disney.

Director Christopher Nolan has defended the sound in his film Interstellar.
Some viewers have complained that sections of dialogue are difficult to hear, but Nolan told the Hollywood Reporter that was intentional.
He said the idea was "to experience the journey the character is going on."
"I've always loved films that approach sound in an impressionistic way and that is an unusual approach for a mainstream blockbuster, but I feel it's the right approach."

I didn't have alot of problems with the sound (other than the music being rather loud!) but I couldn't understand a word My Cocaine was saying

I dont think it makes any difference, in the same article Nolan said he had been to see it on several different cinema formats and praised them for getting the sound right- its just supposed to be hard to hear it seems.

I've wanted to rewatch this old favorite for a long time, but I haven't had time.
If it's possible that anyone here hasn't seen it, I suggest they watch it.

I actually have not seen Close Encounters, but I've heard a lot of good things about it and the trailer was quite intriguing.

Did you notice how the trailer didn't give away the entire plot?

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I watched the theatrical version last night. I have the 30th Anniversary DVD collection that came with all three versions (Theatrical, Special Edition, Director's Cut). It also came with a cool poster that details the differences between all three versions. For your first time watching I'd recommend the theatrical version.
Here's a page that details the differences between each version. Spoiler warning, though.

I'd say if you can't watch all three versions, skip the special edition.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I watched Snowpiercer a couple nights ago, and came away with the conclusion that it does not deserve its 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Similarly to The Host, the film had trouble ending, so that its initial build-up was beautiful, but its payoff rather unsettling and logically inconsistent.
It felt like watching a Korean-directed film based on a French graphic novel.
Which is what it is, so.
Still, the movie had many excellent scenes and ideas that were pulled off with great skill and precision. Worth seeing, but expect to be disturbed.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Yeah I watched Snowpiercer and walked away from it slightly confused. It just didn't get to the place it was trying to, but the effort to get there was admirable. Just like Curtis and friends in the film!
Mocking Jay Part 1 was very good. I like the Hunger Games books because there is a sense of satire in all of them. It kind of mocks itself knowingly, which I enjoy because it gets one step closer to literature. Honestly, I think those books are pretty close to good literature, and might be read in schools someday like Farenheit 451. The movie was an improvement on the book. It stuck to it almost word for word, but the artistic choices made by the director Francis Lawerence (i think that's his name) improved the story as opposed to completely re-routing it. The book was very boring and repetative until the game of thrones style ending. The books are very visual anyway, very savvy on fashion and television. So I think the book actually should have been a movie instead from the get go. The last image was freaky in a good way, though they probably could have made the whole book one movie.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Out of curiosity, what messages/mockeries did you get from Mockingay with regards to TV and stuff? I ask because I've always found the whole reality TV/bread and circuses allegory to be pretty half-baked, but I haven't spent too much time trying to break it down since I read the first book almost three years ago.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I guess knowing how it ends, I personally picked up on how the apparent "good" side is just as manipulative as the bad. I see it more as subtextual messages rather than straight forward. Also, how TV these days (particularly news IMO) is constructed like sneaky propoganda for certain biases. Just stuff I picked out that I liked
Edit: Yes, the Panem thing is pretty half-baked, which is personally why I find the film better than the book. It's easier to see it than to read it. It makes it easier for the fish to realize it's in the bowl.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Sounds interesting. I've been planning on seeing this since I caught Catching Fire on DVD (and thought it was a big step up over the first one), although I was a little disappointed to hear from a number of people that the two-film split seemed pretty unnecessary.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
Just about as unnecessary as a three film split...just about, but not quite as unnecessary

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I'll likely see it with my mom since we watched the first two together. She liked them once she got over the initial shock/horror of the premise, which I don't think she was really knew much about before the first film. I don't really want to reward Lionsgate for cynical movie-splittage, but if I can go and be social with people...
Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I watched "Stonehearst Asylum" this afternoon. Shed load of quality actors in it, ( but you cant judge a film by its actors ) Didnt think I was really gonna like it but, it was GOOD !
- Spoiler:
- The opening scene had me hooked & from then on I was actually captivated by it. At 1st you think,oh yeah, all Drs are good & all inmates are nuts, not quite so, as the film unravels you see both sides of the coin & your left on middle ground not really knowing which side to turn to. Both sides of the coin may I add have very little gap between them as there is only a fine tipping point from sanity to madness in all of us. I was wondering when we'd get a decent asylum film & this so far is it. It has "loonies take over the madhouse", a love triangle, uncertainty, not knowing WHO to trust, & the obligatory twist at the end. Also at the end you see what was missing at the beginning of the film. Cheesy ending but, I can forgive that as at least it was AT the end & not poked halfway thru, I started to twig when the main actor Dr Newgate, lost his glasses in a fight scene, if you watch this you'll know what I mean.It also showed us about the oddness in people, that was classed as enough to be shut away for but, with a little patience, the best can be brought out in said people. Did like Brendan Gleeson, beard & all It flowed at a good pace, didnt feel juddery, pleasant music, witty dialogue, nicely handled I thought especially concerning who wrote it ?

I'm halfway through Locke, and so far it has been completely enjoyable. The characters are interesting, the moral dilemmas compelling, and the film even looks great too.
