Emoji's?

Is there no way to have emoji's in a post when posting from a smartphone? I feel that it would be easier than trying to pick one of the smilies from the side bar or typing in the code.

I just tried it from my computer and it doesn't work. When I go to preview the post, the emoji is there in the preview, but when I send it it's gone.

Obviously a shy and reclusive creature this emoji (I am imagining something that looks a bit like an emu, but with spiky purple manga hair

I'm not sure. I've never used emoticons that weren't part of the site (this or any other). And I type the code for them most of the time, phone or laptop.
