Re: Doctor Who [9]
I was thinking to start with that this is boring ! but, I ended up liking it,
- Spoiler:
- The sentimentality dragged slightly but it had to, I liked the idea of the Brigadier saving his daughter & finally he got his salute from Dr, some things were to easy, even border line childish or slapstick, killing off certain people was also a good idea no matter how much you disliked it. And to end it all the unabiding Love that survives. Love conquers all. Oh what a cliche but its the one true notion there is, it breaks or makes you, it can turn & twist, save or destroy, weakens you or makes you strong. I dont believe the Master is done for, He/she will pop up again one day.But without that fooking awful Mary Poppins hat please !!!

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Just popping in between buckies-
- Spoiler:
- went down well with all here- Missy was a huge hit, best master since the original, never put a foot wrong. She was dangerous, crazy and funny all at once.
Capaldi superb, his betrayal and anger brilliant.
Liked danny was dead not saved, and liked him begging Clara to end his pain and how that all played out regards the Doctor.
The real sentiment that hit was the series long one, the Doctor and Clara going their separate ways because they are both lying to each other to protect the other.
Also loved how the soldier Danny/Doctor dynamic was dealt with. Didn't see the death of UNIT girl coming at all. Thought saving Kate a bit of a cop out but given who saved her I can let that pass with a huge grin on my face.
But it brought together all the themes that have been running throughout this series and dealt with each save lying, which they left to hang in the air.
Overall this has probably been my favourite series of NUWHo. Felt both fresh and more classic at the same time, dealt with proper themes and resolved its themes by end

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- Mmm, I agree it wasnt quite the explosive 2nd half Id hoped for, it was pure sentimentalism, it seemed to me to play heavily on emotions, " what would YOU do" scenario's, I think I dont like that the Mistress/Master didnt put up that much of a fight, physically I mean. Danny's bland one dimensional character emphasized his *ahum* heroic ending & rousing speech. His sacrifce. Tho dragging out the "cyberhug" was pushing it a bit for me.I havent truly kept up to date with The Dr over the years but, I feel, this Dr has had a lot of tugging emotional issues thrown at him ?

The Master never has been much of a hands on fighter except at extreme need. He always preferred devious mad as a box of cats schemes.
'I feel, this Dr has had a lot of tugging emotional issues thrown at him ?'
Well the entire theme of this series has been what sort of man is the Doctor? So it has been an emotional question form the start. And I think people would have rightly been disappointed if after all the set up the matter was not directly addressed.
Also it was a two parter, and most of the sentiment part of it was confined to part two, taken over its whole running time of 1hr 45 minutes I dont think the sentiment outweighed the other factors.

I dont understand this at all. Especially given how dark the subject matter was and that people died.
I thought the Guardian review summed this aspect up well- 'If this was Russell T. Davies’ tenure, everyone would be alive and happy. But it’s not. It’s very adult drama these days.'

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Review roundup-
- Spoiler:
'It caps off a season that has taken risks, recharged the franchise and given us the finest Doctor and companion partnership. Death in Heaven is a deeply satisfying season finale, certainly one of Moffat’s most audacious and most peculiarly moving scripts.'- Radio Times
'Death in Heaven' ended on one of the most downbeat notes in Who history, but it's testament to the wild ride that came before that it truly excelled as a finale, with a whole host of action, humour, spectacle and memorable character moments to round off the season in satisfying (albeit morbid) style.
This season’s revolved around the new Doctor's search for his own humanity, and in 'Death In Heaven' Capaldi tapped into every inch of the Timelord's two hearts. Even if it did break them both (and ours) in the process.'- IGN
'The fine first series of Peter Capaldi’s tenure in the Tardis ended on a high. This episode of Doctor Who (BBC One), Death in Heaven, provided a series denouement that really delivered.
This has been a cracking series, with the show back to its darkly compelling best and Capaldi - clever, complex and unpredictably otherworldly - making the role truly his own.'- The Telegraph
'Onwards with the Christmas special and series 9, then, both of which have a hell of a job on their hands to match what's been achieved with series 8. Death In Heaven more than plays its part there, rounding off both a very good series, and a strong, confident finale.'- Den of Geek
'Good television should be challenging as well as comforting and “Death in Heaven” had a good deal of both.' - The Nerdist
“Death In Heaven” is an immensely enjoyable series finale, and – in best Doctor Who tradition – a rollicking spectacle the like of which you won’t see anywhere else on TV this week.'- SFX
'f you weren’t an emotional wreck after watching tonight’s episode of Doctor Who then you’re as heartless as a Cyberman. Death in Heaven’ is unlikely to leave a dry eye in the house. It’s a fantastic emotionally-charged, action-packed close to Peter Capaldi’s first series as the Time Lord.'- Independent

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- No, I liked it, I woke up this morning still liking it & liking it a lot more than yesterday. It certainly showed us what humans are capable of & the predominant theme was love & sacrifice, or thats how I interpreted it ?. Poor old Dr, cracking up when he saw the co-ordinants for Gallifrey, & then the sad, pack of lies at the end, each one sparing the other more pain, yet feeling the pain themselves. And just as you couldnt feel more deflated in pops Father Christmas to rowse you up.

I'm hooked on Who again. Don't really know what to make of the series overall, or this last installment, but it gripped me from go to wo. I'll wait with baited breath for the next series. A big thumbs up.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- I was pretty bored the whole way through, there were 2 seconds where I sat up and thought, this could be actually interesting, I got quite excited, and then it was over. It was when Clara said that she was the Doctor and that she had been the Doctor all along! . This was brilliant but it lasted two seconds and then it turned out to be a useless bluff and she wasnt really the Doctor at all. For two Whole seconds I thought Doctor Who had become interesting again. sadly it was just soppy sentimental, obvious, boring and trite drivel what a missed opportunity.

what? start with the worst season of Who? why would anyone want to do that? it does make this season look relatively better, but you would be missing out the best truly exciting creative episodes from 1-4 and the best Doctors of NuWho.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Not an opinion I am alone in- series 7 is generally being hailed as a triumph and return to classic form.
Best critical reviews of any series, highest scores on Gallifrey Base for a series, the most steady viewing figures for a series since its return.
I would have no hesitation at all in recommending this series as a jumping on point for new fans.
Would I rather folk watch this two parter or the RTD era Master two parter-with him leaping about the place, and turning everyone into himself then it all being resolved with a literal hand wave within 30 seconds of part two starting?- no I dont think so. Give me this thoughtful story any time over that stuff.
