Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- I dont think it is bad taste. Its not saying everyone who dies is like that. The Doctor was right, its a con. People are being sold the lie that the dead remain conscious in order to get them to preserve their bodies in the institutes so the Master can convert the bodies into cybermen.
Whilst their minds are deliberately confronted with all their regrets and pains in order to get them to voluntarily delete their own emotions ready for downloading back into their upgraded cyberbody.
And its only those preserved in the matrix for cyber conversion who are still attached to their bodies and can feel what it feels (and this was true of cyber conversion in the RTD era too- you are converted awake, conscious and with no pain killers as they literally strip the flesh from you- think of all the screams as they are converted. All Moffat has actually added is the idea that your mind is separated first from the body and the evil idea the Master is playing on human fears of dying to get bodies and minds). The normal dead are just dead.
And yeah that is pretty horrible idea still but it should be. First time since classic era in my view the cybermen have regained their full body horror shock value.
And no one ever said death was off limits for Who as a subject for exploration. Moffat has a history in Who of playing on primordial fears- the things under the bed, childhood nightmares, something moving out the corner of your eye ect. Its almost inevitable he would tackle the ultimate primordial fear of death eventually.

I couldnt believe how bad taste it was, I mean, cremated people feeling pain?!, its quite disgusting, insulting to the people we have lost and Moffat has a duty of care to his viewers kids as well as adults, I thought he stepped over the line big time. Using the Death of Danny in a car accident! also pretty crass.
- Spoiler:
- Oh dear you're just being difficult for the sake of it now, Mrs Figg. If there is such a duty of care then nothing that suggests or portrays life's horrible things should ever go in fictional works! Oh tush you, Mrs Figg! Admitedly, sent a chill down my spine - which means it's a disturbingly captivating story idea. Duty of care? I mean, really, I must protest...

Got to agree with Orwell here.
- Spoiler:
- You cant say a subject cant be in Who on the basis it might upset someone. That way lies the road to bland lifeless fiction in which nothing interesting can happen.
Besides you are a fan of the RTD episode Fathers Day in which Roses' dad Pete is knocked down crossing the road and killed.

- I can understand what Mrs Figg says, Its an idea I havent thought of ? the dead still feeling[b] thats is a gross idea, & then you hear a scream ? Since [b]no one that i know of has popped back to let me know if heaven IS great or Hell IS nasty, then its an idea thats almost plausible ? & thats what took my breath away ! I lost my mother in May this year so this idea struck me but, as this is Dr Who, I feel safe in the knowledge that the Dr will sort this out & shown us how wrong we are ..........I hope

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- It only counts if your being cybermanned. The concept of the dead still feeling is chilling, both as a concept and in story as a means to frighten people into putting their bodies into the tanks.
But thats all it is, an idea to frighten, and isn't that what Who has often done in the past with ideas? Frightened us into making us think?
And I am pretty sure not even Mofffat is actually going to try to answer the question of where people really go.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- you can explain it away til the cows come home. its still bad taste and used for gratuitous schlock value. It was twisted and will have upset a LOT of people. Using Danny as a plot device with the added dead Iraqi kid was pretty flesh crawling stuff too, insulting to all real soldiers watching. Clara was a complete arse, she totally betrayed the Doctor, why didnt she just ask him before she tried to destroy all the Keys? surely thats what friends do? but no, she selfishly emotionally blackmails him. what a cow. But the very worst is still the way they used cremated and people who have left their bodies to science as a cheap plot device. What a load of garbage. oh yeah, Missy snogs the Doctor within the first 5 minutes, yeah more sexually innapropriate behaviour, nice one Moffat, you are on top form.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- insulting to all real soldiers watching- Figg
So no drama should portray the potential consequences of war as it might upset soldiers?
That Danny killed someone and it lead directly to him leaving the army and taking up teaching has been established since his first appearance. It was obvious, and necessary that it be answered within the storyline. And we dont know yet how it will play out.
"why didnt she just ask him before she tried to destroy all the Keys? surely thats what friends do?"
The answer to that is in the dialogue. The Doctor explains the paradox it would cause to her then concludes, "but you know that already, or you wouldn't be threatening me."
Her grief has tipped her over the edge, she has lost the plot. That seems very human to me after all she has gone through.
"But the very worst is still the way they used cremated and people who have left their bodies to science as a cheap plot device."
I dont see it as a cheap lot device at all, its a very clever one, expanding on the traditional cyber factories for converting people. They were slaughter houses with whirring blades and screams. I dont see whats worse about having your mind preserved so it feels being cremated and having all your flesh sythed from you whilst still alive and conscious.
They are both horrible, thats whats horrible about cyberman, they strip your humanity away in a very literal sense.
Expanding that horror so that even seeming death is no reprieve from it is a nice ghoulish idea.
'Missy snogs the Doctor within the first 5 minutes'
I thought it fitted the character. It totally discombobulates the Doctor and amuses the Master. Which is why he has always done things in the past.
I also liked that Missy was running things quietly behind the scenes, reminded me of classic Master, and stories like the Nesteene Consciousness, where he was running the plastics factory.

Now averaging 773,000 viewers for Peter Capaldi’s debut season as the Twelfth Time Lord, Season 8 of DOCTOR WHO is the most-watched season of the program to date, up nearly 25% compared to Season 7 and ranking as the #1 TV series on Canadian specialty television. In fact, DOCTOR WHO is the most-watched television program on Saturday nights in Canada during its 9 p.m. ET timeslot among total viewers and all key demos.'- Gallifrey Base
