Re: Doctor Who [9]
My episode review.
- Spoiler:
- So Listen.
It had all the usual Moffat hallmarks creepy nursery rhyme check. Timeywhimey story check. Big surprise revelation check. Monsters you can't see check and a catchphrase 'Don't turn around' check.
Yet despite these tropes it did not feel anything like any previous Moffat story.
This was intimate, the time travel just a means of progressing the story not a plot in itself.
The monster you can't see a slight of hand.
And a big surprise that was played low key and personal.
With a cast of three this was very personal. And that seems appropriate as the fear explored was also of the personal variety.
Danny Pink's fear of what is under his bed and adult Danny's fear of being judged.
Orson Pink's fear of being alone manifested in what was outside in an empty universe trying to get in.
And central to all and driving the plot, the fear that has always driven the Doctor.
Its rare in Who to get what seems a traditional monster of the week episode without there being a monster. And herein lies the episodes genius.
Is there a monster?
Or is it all just our own fears painting monsters into shadows and onto sounds?
Was their a monster under Danny's bedsheet or just a kid playing silly buggers?
Did the Doctor write listen on his chalkboard and then forget he had done it? Or did something else do it when his back was turned?
Was there anything outside Orsen's base? Or was it really just the pipes and atmospheric shielding switching modes as night came on?
But whilst the tension was nicely cranked up in all the right places it was the characters which drove it.
Capaldi owns the part completely now, whether its delivering the terror laden cry of "I have to know!" or joking that Clara's face is so wide she needs three mirrors. He is utterly captivating and wonderfully unknowable and alien without being unlikeable.
Clara's personality transplant continues apace, she really has been an unexpected delight this series. With the Doctor both sharp with her and knowing when to step back and let her do what she does better than him: be human.
The idea to make Clara a teacher has greatly informed her personality this series, and in this episode it was her words of calm, her words of wisdom that resolved the situation.
And for old Whovians how beautiful to hear her comfort the young Doctor with the words "Fear makes companions of us all" which the Doctor himself, in his very first incarnation and very first story would repeat to his first human companions, Barbara and Ian when they were terrified in the Cave of Skulls.
Its one of those things that its not necessary to know when watching the episode, but if known adds a whole extra layer to the scene.
So what to the story then? Well we start with the Doctor talking to himself, something he has a habit of doing in the past when traveling alone. But this episode raises another question, what happens when the Doctor is left alone dwelling on his fears?
He starts to wonder, is he really alone. Is anyone really ever alone? All those times he cant remember doing something, or thought he set something down somewhere only to find it moved, what if it wasn't him?
We get a parallel of this with Orson, a time traveler flung to the end of the universe, the last person alive in a dead universe. Marooned alone for six months he has started to believe that he is not alone at all and that the noises he hears at night are the sounds of something out there, trying to get in.
And so it is with the Doctor. Old fears from childhood surfacing and being processed by his adult brain in a big what if scenario?
Meanwhile Clara is on a disastrous first date with Danny (a touch of Moffats preWho days sitcom writing here in the style of his series Coupling) and is whisked away by an unsympathetic Doctor.
We get to see her fly the TARDIS too, well sort of, through the slightly squishy Cronenbergesque telepathic circuits, but a distracting phone call from Danny takes her back not to her own childhood fears, but to his.
What we have hear is what the cast have dubbed a 'moffat loop', Clara sets in motion Danny's future soldier life, using the icon of a toy soldier without a gun, a soldier so good he doesn't even need a gun to protect him and watch out for monsters under his bed.
A toy soldier, Clara's apparent future descendent, Orson Pink, returns to her and she in turn gives to the young Doctor, the boy who would grow up, steal a TARDIS and defend the weak throughout the universe and Time, the ultimate soldier without a gun.
Those hoping for an adventurous episode with shenanigans and daring-do may be disappointed. This is an episode where the focus is on characters, development, and the scenes are allowed and given the space to breath, with some excellent direction (it would be very easy to not make a creepy scene out of someone under a blanket, but the tension is milked to breaking point instead and is highly effective. I'm sure many a kid slept with the light on and got Mum or Dad to check under the bed first after that scene!).
And the big surprise of course was seeing the young Doctor, though we saw no more than an outline in the dark of the barn where he went to sleep so the others could not hear him crying.
In another of those tiny but lovely touches the episode was full of we learn that this barn is the same one the War Doctor took the Moment to in the 50th.
But its Clara's words to him, a mix of her own humanity and kindness and the Doctor's own wisdom which in turn sets the young boy on the path to eventually become the Doctor we know. A Moffat loop indeed!
So overall one of the best episodes of NuWho, an intimate character study that explored human paranoia and fears of the irrational kind. And a further piece is slotted into place about this incarnation of the Doctor and what drives him.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Just finished Into the Dalek.
On to Robot of Sherwood!
Edit:
I stayed up far too late and watched Listen as well. It was great!
I mean, definitely not too wise to watch it in the dark on a laptop with headphones on, but then I suppose that enhances the experience more than anything else. It had an interesting introduction with the purely logical approach to the Doctor's reasoning. I don't want to make any religious comparisons, but it's an interestingly circular sort of reasoning: that something might be there simply because it's nature is such that we cannot see it or feel it.
Anyway, worked quite well overall, and I really loved the ending. The ending made up for the absolutely awful interactions between Clara and Danny.

- Spoiler:
- I loved seeing the War Doctor and having that barn explained! That sort of tying-together of greater-themes was something we should get more of and that was rather missing from Robot of Sherwood in terms of the Doctor's overall story.
- Spoiler:
- A new alien creature, and bank robbing. I could eat my own socks if the banker-lady I saw in the preview turns out to be a cliched villain (something 4's run is full of so far by the way, speaking of Classic Who), but I'm sure her portrayal will give Mrs. Figg much food for thought in her evaluation of the infamous Moffat!

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Oh hey speaking of Robin Hood crossovers (and I know this is an old post of yours Petty, but I've been catching up on all the spoilers I missed). The whole Spoon and Sword fight had me thinking of the line delivered by Alan Rickman's Sheriff.Pettytyrant101 wrote:I want to see something I haven't seen before- Amarie
Um exactly when was the last time you saw a sword fight where one of them uses a spoon? Cant get much more Who than that.
Sheriff: "I'm going to carve out Robin Hood's heart with a spoon."
His brother: "But why not a sword? Or an axe?"
Sheriff: "BECAUSE it will HURT more, you IDIOT!!"

Re: Doctor Who [9]
I must say Mrs. Figg, I find Petty's enthusiasm a tad over-eager in parts (I mean, I like the new stuff, but it's not all that amazing*) but this dismissive tone you are using here is border-line rude! Or at least it can come across as such. I think Petty is raising some good points, and to dismiss Capaldi's doctor right off the bat just sounds like bitterness.Mrs Figg wrote:Nah this latest season is lacking the verve and giddy excitment Eccy and Rose gave to us. As for so called Capaldi layers you can keep them, they are boring. I am not convinced capaldi is telling a story yet. He is up and down and floundering around like an eel Wrangler in jelly. One minute he is teetering on the edge of interesting then he blows it in Robots.
I am far behind on the thread, and I believe I just triple-posted. So I apologize if you have expressed further thoughts on the matter that contradict what I am saying.
Anyway, I found the dialogue pretty hilarious at parts. When the Doctor begins to describe the "fit" of fear and lilly-liveredness that Robin suffers from whenever he is in danger, and Robin's cries of pain turn into outrage and indignation at being described thus, may not have been sophisticated Who, but it was pretty hilarious.
- Spoiler:
- Of course, the golden arrow solution at the end was utterly ridiculous (and kind of dumb) but I suppose the plot's shortcomings are why this episode won't be remembered as much of a keeper.
*FINALLY those endless rays of anti-Dalek guns do some real damage!

I smell trouble, Forest...
- Spoiler:
- I thought the same about the arrow thing at first - but then thought it does fit in with the whole Errol Flynn "Robin" slant of the episode. Not a historically set version, but a fantasy version - almost a spoof. I think it works very well once that is consideed. Even Clara dressing up for a Robin Hood adventure adds to the fun - not to mention how pretty and joyful she is. I'm with Petty. I'm loving this series.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
No that's silly, they have electric eels for that sort of thing.
And yes Mrs. Figg, not borderline but the full monty!
I do agree that the recent season has lacked the charm and appeal of Tennant's Doctor, but I have a rather huge crush on Tennant in Who (Or... anything to be honest), and so I can't honestly use that as a basis for comparison.
Anyway, you liked Capaldi in Listen was it? In that case I agree! He was the highlight in my opinion.
Clara and Danny were so busy making themselves look weird that the Doctor appeared great in comparison.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
I am not sure what you mean by weird Forest, they didnt seem weird to me.
- Spoiler:
- They went on a date, it went badly because they were both stressing and worrying about things about themselves and how they were coming over and being perceived, leading to awkwardness. By story end Clara has learned what the Doctor did, that its all in the head, that if you allow your own fears to become too big they will blind you and make you act in an unnecessary ways because they were never real in the first place. Just our own personal fears and hang ups projected onto the world you perceive.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- Ok things I like. Love the new deeper character stuff Clara has to work with, love the three of them together, Danny Pink is great, liked the gentle goofy romance between Clara and Danny. love Capaldis performance in this one. It seemed to be 'his' Doctor at long last, and it suits him. I liked the idea of the story and in parts was creepy, ie blanket monster. I enjoyed this the most of the 4 episodes. No running around, no Paternoster numpties, it was ok, quite liked it, but I wouldnt watch it twice.
ok bits I didnt like. The monster was a huge anticlimax after a 5 minute foreplay. The door and the banging on the sealed door was building up to be really scary, and then .....nothing. wtf.. like really you cant do that its a cheap cheat. all we saw was the Doctor floating with his little legs dangling.. just not good enough. For 1000 years in the Doctors past, it sure looked like a mid Victorian barn, another wtf moment. Not too keen on the many Danny many Clara incarnations, it could be interesting unless they pop up every episode.
So they were trying to make the next Blink, but it just wasnt as good.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- I thought the lack of monster was one of the best things about it- indeed the whole point. The episode is about fears and paranoia. There never was any monster.
The genius of how creepy those scenes were, the bed and the banging on the door, is that there was nothing there- the obvious answer was the real one- kid under a blanket and the building settling.
The sort of fear any child (or adult) can relate to, we've all got worked up and creeped out by unusual and unexplained noises at night in the dark.
Putting some generic monster in there and having a chase the monster scene would have ruined the whole point being made and taken away the entire purpose of the episode.
The barn is the same one he goes to in the 50th.
Gallifrey has two different societies- the Time Lords, who are like the aristocracy, and Gallifreyeans, who are more or less ordinary folk, in classic they were often portrayed as seeming quite pastoral, so a barn seems appropriate.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- I dont see how it can be dishonest. It makes the viewer complicit, but thats a strength of the writing and direction in my book.
The premise is barmy- the Doctor is looking for monsters under the bed- we the viewer only buy into it at all because its the Doctor saying it. And then we see monsters in what is going on, just as he does. We populate the episode with them, just as we populate our real world with them, especially when we are children.
I dont see how the episode could have made its point had there actually been a monster. And besides, any monster we did see could only be a disappointment.
Monster of the imagination are always more terrifying, which is after all the episodes whole point.

Good news for Who in the US it seems.

I dont see how it can be dishonest.

- I know what they were aiming for, but it doesnt work. Its a horrible anticlimax. You have to have a payoff, but it just felt a disapointment. They did actually show a monster, the blanket thing, and that was scary and fits into the imaginary fears thing, but the locked door part didnt work at all. when somebody asked the Doctor what he saw when the door opened, it should have been something scary but it just tailed off into nothing. I have never ever seen a horror film or thriller or suspense film where there after everyone has been thoroughly spooked there is actually 'nothing' at the end of the story, and everyone has laughed and said, its just the imagination playing tricks, its too easy to have 'nothing', saves on cgi or whatever, its just cheap. it doesnt work and it Leaves people thinking what was all the fuss about nothing.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- Well it worked for me- and I dont seem to be alone in that given the sort of critical and fan reception its got- currently sitting at over 70% of votes on Gallifrey Base scoring it an 8, 9, or 10 out of 10 (less than 4% have given it a 1,2 or 3- from a sample group of 3,277)
I just don't see how you could do that story, on that subject matter and have a monster- it would be silly and completely undermine the entire point of the episode.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- The door opening was a bit odd, mainly the jump from hanging on by his fingers to passed out inside of the Tardis after a Miraculous Rescue we don't get to see. The episode was alright. I am a bit worried about Clara; she can't do anything wrong. Even when she makes mistakes it is just a tiny little bump in the road that leads to Greatness and The Right Thing To Do while having Perfect Hair and Makeup. They are careful not to tick all the Mary Sue boxes though, but I am still a bit worried.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- He got knocked out by being hit on the head. Orson says stuff was flying out the open door, and speculates something hit him. But the reason we dont see it is to keep the episode premise open that maybe some creature or other hit him.
Thats the pattern all the way through- in each case of an appearance of the potential monster someone always offers up the more likely rational explanation.
If we were shown just some random bit of debris hitting him it would spoil that duality.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
It does strike me as a great idea and concept. Though I'm not sure to what degree it translated as an episode.
I only caught the last half though and didn't understand much, so I'll watch the whole thing before making up my mind.
