It's a hell of a lot better than The Lazarus experiment that's for sure.

Who has always done this. Thats one of the advantages to the format of the show, it can be both.
Even NuWHo it has done this- 9's run went from farting aliens in downing street (including Scooby Doo 'comedy' chase scene in the hallway) to Dalek and 9 screaming spittle flecked "Why dont you just die!".

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- It seems disjointed and odd after the first two episodes as if was just plonked in willynilly, it looked like some Smith episode they had forgotten and reused for Capaldi. But it would probably have been more amusing with Smith as he is good at childish nonsense, Capaldi just looks like a twit.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- I liked Capaldi in this, I have always found him superb at humour from watching The thick of It and thought he was excellent at the humour in this.
Out of the half dozen or so reviews I have read so far the few ones which are negative have singled his performance out as carrying the episode (but overall the reviews are pretty good- not classic or anything, just fun romp seems to be the general consensus so far)

The worst episode I've seen is either The Web Planet or The End of Time, overblown, self indulgent confusing nonsense.
The Farting Aliens aren't that stupid for Doctor Who (what about Frobisher the shapeshifting wisecracking penquin in the expanded media?) but weren't exactly enjoyable, deinftle felt much more suitable for the SJ adventures, very kiddie showish.

- the reviews I have read have said Jenna carried the show, while Capaldi looked like he didnt fit in the episode.- Figg
Not the reviews I seem to be reading, though they do give a lot of credit to Jenna too and to the continued development of Clara. Th only one criticising Capaldi I think so far is the SFX review.
'his script is a gift to Peter Capaldi too. A hugely talented comedy performer, when he puts across that he doesn’t warm to Robin Hood too much, there can be scarcely anyone in the audience who remains unconvinced. Whether it’s a sneer or a cutting putdown, or declaring "I am the Doctor and this is my spoon" (Sylvester McCoy would be proud), this is humour that fits the persona he's been building of his Doctor tightly.'- Den of Geek
'Capaldi’s Doctor steps out of the shadows of the earlier episodes yet remains resolutely dour, hilariously so, questioning the reality of Robin and his surroundings, and discomfited as the truth dawns. Like his predecessors long ago in the 1960s and 70s, he’s a strange senior figure, authoritative but not always correct in his assertions.'- RT
'it is Capaldi that saves this episode'- Wales online
So far Ive only read 3 out and out negative reviews with nothing positive to say, and one of them just laments all the way through its not 'dark'.

Well...I'm pretty impressed they got that script to be approved by the producers, so that's positive right?
Apparently it's one of Capaldi's fave stories!

Re: Doctor Who [9]

Hardly Legendary - Doctor Who: Robots of Sherwood Review
www.facebook.com/vuepointuk
In the first week we saw the Doctor flirting with a T-rex. In the second he turned a Dalek good. Unfortunately, Peter Capaldi’s third outing as the time-hopping hero held nothing particularly memorable, and will likely come to be known as “that one with Ben Miller in it”.
At Clara’s request, the TARDIS lands in Nottingham, and much to the Doctor’s confusion, Robin Hood appears. It isn’t long until the Doctor finds himself embroiled in a plot by the Sheriff of Nottingham to kill King John and take over England with the help of robots that fell from the sky. It sounds like a fun plot, putting a distinctly Doctor Who twist on the classic legend of Robin Hood, but the execution doesn’t deliver.
Instead we get a drab tale in which nobody really does anything. The Doctor, Clara and Robin get captured, Clara gets taken to the Sheriff who explains where the robots came from, Robin and the Doctor escape themselves and find their way to the control room where they realize that the castle is a ship powered by gold, that the Sheriff plans on flying to London to kill King John. Insert two boring action scenes and a painfully predictable ending, and roll credits! It’s the first time in my memory during an episode of Doctor Who that I’ve been bored, and at the end I felt like the episode was remarkably short, due to the lack of anything happening.
The Doctor’s trip to Sherwood is undoubtedly the least eventful and least entertaining in a long time. With no particularly stand out moments, and a distinct lack of humour or thrills that the series usually nails, Robots of Sherwood will soon be forgotten amongst the heaps of far better episodes out there. But hey, next week looks good!
Doctor Who Review : Robot Of Sherwood
idiotbox .co.uk
Of all the brief episode synopsis’s we had for this series of Doctor Who it was this one that had me a little concerned for the finished product, a concern that sadly was justified. Whereas Deep Breath was a slow burning mystery and Into The Dalek was an action adventure Robot Of Sherwood falls firmly into the ‘romp’ category and it seems to be a genre for the show that even the mighty Peter Capaldi can’t sell fully. To put it bluntly this one is all over the place, a light hearted and fun filled episode would be perfectly welcome had it been given a strong story to accompany it but this one has a premise that is shaky at best.
And it was all going so well, Robin Hood’s first meeting with the last of the Timelord’s is a mess of an episode, too silly to take seriously and not as fun as they had clearly hoped. Let’s hope it’s the only blip for the season.
Doctor Who: Robot Of Sherwood by Mark Gattis (TV review)
SFcrowsnest
It’s probably the fault of the script but the Doctor seems to be turning into a buffoon than someone who is genuinely out there to help people. It’s one thing to know that Peter Capaldi can play comedy but he must surely be worth more than that. It’s as if the writers can’t get Malcolm Tucker out of their heads.
Granted that everyone concerned are still finding their way with how to deal with the new Doctor, you would think they would know better by now with so much experience under their belts. This is still coming over as Doctor-lite when we all know the series can do better than this. There really should be an attempt to bring in new writers and hopefully with some stronger ideas.
The Preview Review: Doctor Who Series 8 Episode 3: Robot of Sherwood [Spoiler-Free]
life doctor who and comdom www.combom.uk
Mark Gatiss's Doctor Who episodes have always divided fan opinion, especially here at Team Combom, and Robot of Sherwood will be no different. After the first two dark episodes,a light-hearted fairly standalone episode was much needed. It is very much aimed at being comedic, which it pulls off the majority of the time, until it gets repetitive. Gatiss still hasn't seemed to have mastered the idea of subtly, with an penis size joke serving as this episode's "Hammer to the Face". Similarly, I could not have possibly imagined a more generic and clichéd villain's plan
The episode does not fit the current Doctor very well. It severely lacks the dark tone in the show, and it feels far too much like a Matt Smith story which has been recycled, with only the tone of the Doctor changing to fit Capaldi.
If the writer wished for the events of the episode to remain suspenseful, the title is incredibly poor. It manages to give away both twists, way before the episode gets to it.
Throughout much of the episode, The Doctor scoffs about Robin Hood, and his Merry Men, even existing, which I don't feel fits into the show's theme at all. This is a show that often goes to great lengths to show to the viewer that legends and myths are either real, or based on fact, yet The Doctor continuously kept his viewpoint. This makes me feel very disconnected to him, far beyond his views in Into the Dalek.

- Spoiler:
- Seems to be polarizing episode- on Gallifrey Base its averaging 8 out of 10, with a lot of 9 and 10's too. But those who dont rate it like Figg really dont and score it 1 or 2.
Does seem to have gone down particularly well however so far with folks watching with young kids and to be a firm favourite with the younger viewers (who frankly are more important than us, they're the shows future) judging by the 'what the kids thought' section of that forum anyway

It's a Gatiss ep that tell's you all you need to know. In general the consensus I've seen is 'That was fun for the fmaily, but rather forgettable for Who'. Alot of reviews seem to be picking up on Capaldi's inconsistent character so far in the series, It's a concern I kinda share.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Its odd, but I dont think it has been inconsistent more delibretly paced out to form a Doctor shaped by events and people.
- Spoiler:
- Each episode part of what seems to define this Doctor is slotted into place by the people and events he encounters. And I am really enjoying watching the Doctor figure himself out.
Tonights was the same with the comparison between the idea of two legends and two heroes.
I thought the bit at the end was particularly pertinent to that.
Instead of pinging right in with a completely formed Doctor they have taken the choice to character develop this one over several episode (possibly the entire first series) and each week we end up with a more complete picture, as the Doctor does himself, of who he is and what he stands for.
It reminds me somewhat of the plans for 6 who supposed to grow, mellow and come back to the man who saves the universe, but it got pulled before that got anywhere leaving 6 seeming just mean spirited and egotistical and prone to outbrusts of violence.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- Good question about the sonic- last was known the Sheriff had it and he went in the vat.
Given that was not his original ending- that was the scene the BBC cut out -where the Sheriff is beheaded- because of recent real world events, and as he is the Robot of the title, the head keeps talking. So the Doctor could have got it back no problem in the original edit.
But they replaced that at the last minute with him falling into the VAT of gold instead. So maybe that sonic is gone and the TARDIS will have to make him a new one again.
I dont think Marion was waiting about outside the TARDIS, I think the Doctor went and rescued her in the TARDIS and then when he dematiralised left her behind (like in BLINK) but I'll need to see the ep again to be sure

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- what strikes me is that this episode is far too early in the series, once you have established a character you can have fun with it, ie lots of the fun Tennant and Smith episodes are when you pretty much understand what you are getting in terms of the Doctors character, but at this early stage i for one havent made my mind up what he is like and all the various nuances. i think Capaldi is very much an adult friendly Doctor rather than a kid friendly one, so maybe this episode was to keep the kids onboard with a fun episode so early. If I was a kid I would find Capaldi a difficult Doctor to love, not because he is older, but because he is (at the moment) only easy for adult Whovians to really deconstruct and 'get', a kid could be a bit scared by him, and nonplussed. Eccy, Tennant and Smith are instantly likeable to kids, they are relatable, they are like cool uncles or something, but capaldi is much less so in my opinion. I am finding that Clara is overshadowing him, she is more interesting to me than he is, hopefullt next epsode will start to give us some meat.

Re: Doctor Who [9]
- Spoiler:
- Anecdotal of course but my own nieces and my mates kids love Capaldi's Doctor. Even when they are a bit frightened of him, they seem to find it a bit thrilling- in much the same way kids seemed to love Hartnell's original Doctor who could also be quite scary at moments and stern. It seems to appeal to kids.
I do think it was important to have a light episode however. The first two were quite dark and next weeks looks like a proper kids hiding behind the sofa ep- I think had there been 4 dark and or scary episodes in a row that would not be setting the right tone for a new Doctor. It would be too unremittingly dark for the character.
Anyone else wonder what 12 is working out on his blackboards? Is it to do with the Promised Land and Missy? Or is he maybe working out where Gallifrey might be? Or just doing some sums for fun?

Re: Doctor Who [9]
malick,
- Spoiler:
- No not really, I havent loved any of them because I wasnt too keen on Smith as the Doctor. Some I liked, oh hang on I really liked the Christmas one in the 1940s, and the one with the big guy (can't remember his name) when his house has a monster in the attic. edit I liked 'Hide' too. and Rorys dad. and the one with Vincent Van Gogh

Re: Doctor Who [9]
Does rather sum up the Doctors attitude to the notion of their being a real Robin Hood at episode start rather well.
